Aunque todo estaba preparado para la conferencia del autor de Al filo del agua --que con Pedro Páramo, de Rulfo, eran las obras maestras de la literatura mexicana, la llegada de Agustín Yáñez puso patas arriba a, no solo a nuestro despacho, sino a buena parte de los intelectuales madrileños, a diplomáticos y a políticos.
Corría la primavera de 1977... Franco había muerto, y la llegada del mexicano Agustín Yáñez, que no era únicamente escritor de renombre, sino también un político influyente, que había sido gobernador del Estado de Jalisco y secretario de Educación Pública de México, y ahora el presidente de la Academia Mexicana de la Lengua y, lo que era más importante, presidente del Colegio de México. El 28 de marzo de 1977, México y España habían restablecido las relaciones diplomáticas. España era una democracia desde el 15 de junio de 1977.
Agustín Yáñez venía oficialmente a dar una conferencia sobre su fecunda obra literaria y, de paso, al llevarse las cenizas del «Maestro de América», Justo Sierra Méndez, que había fallecido en Madrid en 1912. Varios notables mexicanos pugnaban por ser embajadores en España. Lo cierto es que después de varias entrevistas con Marcelino Oreja, ministro de Asuntos Exteriores, el 21 de julio de 1977, presentaba credenciales, el primer embajador de México en la España democrática, Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, íntimo amigo de Agustín Yáñez, de cuyo Gobierno fuera secretario de Educación.
Agustín Yáñez era uno de los mejores oradores que jamás he conocido. He conocido muchos, y todos eran americanos, ninguno español. Dicho de otro modo, para que no haya dudas: los mejores oradores en lengua española, desde el siglo XX, son americanos. Eso sin mentar a los parlamentarios españoles, cuyas intervenciones son balbuceos incoherentes, carentes de ingenio. He escuchado en parlamentos, a oradores, mexicanos, colombianos y nicaragüenses, y da placer escucharlos. En España escuchar a nuestros políticos es una tortura. Lo digo con la autoridad que me otorgan los largos años de docencia e investigación lingüística universitaria y la autoría de varios libros sobre esta materia.
Luis Rosales insistió en que guiase a Agustín y a Olivia, su esposa, por España, --Castilla, Extremadura y Andalucía--. Luis me aseguró que no me arrepentiría y, como siempre acertó. Agustín Yáñez, a pesar de su profundo conocimiento de la historia y la cultura españolas, había jurado no pisar suelo español mientras viviese el dictador.
Era un gigante de casi dos metros, bien parecido, ataviado con cuidado desaliño. Olivia, su esposa, una mujer 'güera' de gran belleza, voz dulce y enorme discreción, lo mimaba. Viajar con ellos era una delicia y una lección. Yo conocía España, pero Agustín la conocía mucho mejor, y era la primera vez que la pisaba. No era un gurmé refinado, pero apreciaba los postres de chocolate y era entendido en vinos y más aún en brandis. Saliendo de Burgos se detuvo para hacer 'aguas menores'.
Súbitamente, desapareció. Olivia, el conductor y yo nos pusimos a buscarlo. Oímos unos lamentos entre la yerba exuberante de la cuneta. No parábamos de reír. Olivia le decía dulcemente: «Agustín; es que bebes mucho brandi.»
Dos años después fui a México, un país 10 veces más grande que España, que recorrí desde río Bravo del Norte hasta Yucatán y del Atlántico a la Mar del Sur, el Pacífico. Me acompañaba Juan Manuel González Camarena, hombre de confianza de Agustín Yáñez, que me esperó en Guadalajara. Me la quería enseñar él. Es sorprendente, pero los más grandes, son los más próximos, afables y humildes.
