This week, in the battle for the 2016 Olympics, the Brazilians waxed the star power of Oprah and the Obamas. Chicago was rejected on the first ballot, and conservatives couldn't contain their glee. I thought it was only the coasts that Republicans think are not part of the real America. Now it's the Midwest, too? I wonder how far their bizarre wish for America to fail would go: if the Windy City had gotten the Olympics, would Republicans have rooted against American athletes? Would chants of "USA! USA!" have been replaced by shouts of "Government-run sports is socialism!" and "Keep your hands off my high jump!"? One sure sign that a political party has completely lost its way is when it finds itself cheering that an American city will not be hosting the Olympics.
My love affair with books is a long one. As a little girl growing up in Athens, I remember sending my friends home early from my fifth birthday party because all that celebrating was keeping me away from my books. Who needed friends and cake? I had my books! Since I was 21, there hasn't been a time when I wasn't researching or writing a book. Until now. Bill Moyers Journal is always illuminating, but tonight's episode, featuring a conversation with Rep. Marcy Kaptur (so amazing in Michael Moore's new film) and economist Simon Johnson is one that no one should miss.
This week, a day after Democrats voted down an attempt to remove scandal-plagued Ways and Means Committee chairman Charlie Rangel from his post, the House Ethics Committee voted unanimously to expand its investigation of him. Nancy Pelosi, who promised to "drain the swamp" and create "the most honest, most open, and most ethical Congress in history," is, instead, sticking by Rangel. Talk about tone deaf. The Democrats have to make it clear to America's beleaguered middle class that they don't believe there are two sets of rules: one for the power players of Wall Street and Washington, and one for everybody else. Congress' approval rating is at 21 percent, a 10 point drop over the last month. If the Democrats want to see it hit single digits, by all means, keep Charlie Rangel as chairman. This week, Obama's pay czar announced he'd be slashing executive pay at seven of the biggest recipients of bailout billions. So it's no surprise that many of Wall Street's Masters of the Universe didn't turn up at the New York fundraiser President Obama spoke at -- choosing instead to attend a party thrown to toast the release of Too Big To Fail, Andrew Ross Sorkin's blow-by-blow account of the meltdown. There, enjoying cocktails and finger food, were many of the central players, including Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan and John Mack of Morgan Stanley. Which is kind of like Hannibal Lecter showing up for the opening of Silence of the Lambs. Perhaps they take comfort in Sorkin's assessment that when it comes to reforming Wall Street "the Obama administration seems to have moved on to other priorities." I need a drink.
