Dolores intensos en el cuerpo y en la garganta, estornudos persistentes, fiebre, y un malestar general son los síntomas. A primera vista parece un resfriado, pero no lo es. Es el nuevo y misterioso virus que está afectando a cientos de niños en Estados Unidos, indicó el periódico USA TODAY.

Diez estados del país están bajo alerta por los Centros para el Control y Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC, por sus siglás en inglés) ante el número creciente de casos con este raro virus, identificado como Enterovirus 68.

La mayoría de los afectados son niños, especialmente aquellos vulnerables a enfermedades o infecciones respiratorias, y los tratamientos para controlar los peligrosos síntomas son suministrados en las salas de cuidados intensivos.

De acuerdo con los expertos, cuando una persona manifiesta una severa gripe de la temporada de verano es un tipo de enterovirus, explicó Mark Pallansch, virólogo y director de los CDC.

Existen más de 100 tipos de enterovirus que causan de 10 a 15 millones de infecciones cada año en Estados Unidos, precisó el CDC. La mayoría se alojan en las vías intestinales y después se propagan por el resto del cuerpo.

Entre la ciudades más afectadas está Kansas City, Missouri, donde al menos unos 30 niños por día presentan los síntomas del Enterovirus 68.

Otros estados que han confirmado casos son Colorado, Georgia, Carolina del Norte, Iowa, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma y Kentucky.
