BYLAKUPPE, India (AP) — Miles de tibetanos ondearon pancartas y bailaron y niños cantaron oraciones el sábado en una universidad tibetana del sur de la India en celebración del cumpleaños 78 del Dalai Lama.

Después de una reunión interconfesional, el líder espiritual de los tibetanos hizo un llamado al amor y la compasión como medios para promover la paz mundial. El evento se llevó a cabo en un monasterio budista en Bylakuppe, aproximadamente a 220 kilómetros (137 millas) al sur de Bangalore.

Mientras miraba a un sacerdote musulmán, el Dalai Lama dijo que el verdadero significado del yihad, o guerra santa, era "combatir nuestras emociones negativas".

"El yihad no es golpear o matar (a otros)", indicó.

Durante el evento, dijo que 150.000 tibetanos que viven en el extranjero representan "a seis millones de tibetanos (en China) que no tienen libertad ni oportunidad para expresar lo que sienten".

El Dalai Lama vive en el exilio en la India desde 1959. Beijing lo acusa de buscar la separación del Tíbet de China, pero él asegura que sólo desea mayor autonomía bajo el régimen chino.
