NUEVA YORK (AP) — Nadie ha sido capaz de vencer a Floyd Mayweather en 44 combates. ¿Será Saúl Alvarez el hombre que podrá acabar con el invicto?

"Me motiva que él está catalogado como el mejor. Yo quiero estar entre los mejores. Y esta es mi oportunidad", afirmó Alvarez.

Mayweather y Alvarez pusieron en marcha el lunes una gira de promoción que visitará 11 ciudades en Estados Unidos y Ciudad de México para el choque de invictos el 14 de septiembre en Las Vegas, la pelea más esperada del año.

Una gira de esta magnitud no se montaba en el boxeo desde 2007, cuando Mayweather y Oscar De La Hoya también visitaron 11 ciudades en la antesala de su pelea por el centro junior mediano y que batió récords en compras de televisión paga.

En un día de sofocante calor en Manhattan, la primera cita de los boxeadores fue al aire libre en Times Square.

Mayweather, de 36 años, viene de revalidar su título en las 147 libras (welter) tras vencer por decisión unánime a Robert Guerrero el 4 de mayo.

"Para seguir en el pináculo hay que ganarle a los mejores que hay", dijo Mayweather. "Quiero exigirme contra cualquiera".

Ídolo en México a sus 22 años, "Canelo" Alvarez tiene foja de 42-0-1 con 30 nocauts y unificó los títulos de las 154 libras (súper welter) en abril gracias a su victoria por decisión unánime ante Austin Trout.

El combate a 12 asaltos fue pactado en el peso de 152 libras y en juego estarán los títulos que ostentan.

La confirmación de la pelea se produjo el mes pasado, con ambos dando la noticia en sus cuentas de Twitter.

Mayweather, quien disputará la segunda pelea de un contrato de seis con el canal Showtime y con el que puede embolsarse más de 200 millones de dólares, se subirá un tinglado dos veces en el mismo año por primera ocasión desde 2007.

"Estoy sorprendido de que vamos a pelear a este año. Su patrón era pelear una vez al año y la verdad era que esta pelea iba a darse el año que viene", dijo Alvarez. "Ahora lo que importa es ganar como sea".
