Con una buena actuación de la selección de Estados Unidos en el CenturyLink Field, en Seattle, la escuadra de Jurguen Klinsmann aprovechó su condición de local para empezar a enfilarse a la Copa del Mundo de Brasil 2014, luego de vencer por 2-0 al conjunto de Panamá.

Con la victoria, la escuadra de las barras y las estrellas se colocó al frente del hexagonal final al llegar a 10 puntos, dejando en segundo lugar a Costa Rica y México con 8 unidades, en cuarto se colocó Honduras al arribar a 7, Panamá cayó hasta el quinto al quedarse con 6 y en el fondo, y ya prácticamente eliminado, Jamaica con 2.

El partido de principio a fin fue dominado por el cuadro estadounidense, pues desde los primeros minutos se hizo del control del balón al tocarlo por toda la cancha, pero la primera clara la dejó ir al minuto 21 en un disparo de Michael Bradley, donde su mismo compañero Dempsey tapó el tiro cuando se dirigía a gol.

Panamá por escasos momentos tuvo el control de la redonda, siendo su mejor hombre Alberto Quintero, quien por la banda izquierda fue un dolor de cabeza para la zaga local, pero no tuvo nadie que lo acompañara; incluso el equipo panameño consiguió un gol al final de la primera parte por medio de Luis Tejada, pero le fue anulado correctamente por un claro fuera de lugar.

El combinado de Estados Unidos consiguió el primer gol al minuto 35 en los botines de Jozy Altidore, quien logró cerrar la pinza por el lado derecho luego de un excelente pase de Geoff Cameron por el sendero izquierdo.

Para la segunda parte, Estados Unidos sobrellevó las acciones, teniendo más tiempo la pelota, pero de nueva cuenta otra pincelada de su mediocampista Geoff Cameron para Eddie Jonhson hizo que su escuadra aumentara su ventaja al 53’, luego de trazar un excelente pase para el delantero que lo dejó solo frente al portero Penedo, a quien no tuvo problemas para vencerlo.

Con el segundo gol a su favor, el cuadro local tomó más confianza, por lo que estuvo más cerca del tercero que Panamá del primero, después de que Altidore sacó escopetazo desde larga distancia que tapó el portero Penedo, pero en el contrarremate Dempsey de botepronto disparó y estrelló la pelota en el poste superior (65’).

Al 79’ de nueva cuenta Estados Unidos se quedó cerca del tercero en otra gran jugada, luego de estrellar otra pelota en el poste, pero ahora estuvo a cargo de DaMarcus Beasley, quien recibió un pase de Altidore que lo dejó solo frente al portero, pero su tiro no encontró el objetivo deseado.

Al final del cotejo, el conjunto de las barras y las estrellas sobrellevó las acciones, por lo que Panamá continuó con la pólvora mojada, lo mejor que pudo hacer fue en tiempo de compensación por medio del ingresado Rolando Blackburn, quien en un mano a mano con Howard le estrelló la pelota en su humanidad, por lo que la pizarra ya no se movió.
