Hace seis años, el cubano Yuriorkis Gamboa veía al boxeo profesional como la cima del deporte en el que quería destacar. Ahora esa imagen ha cambiado.

“Cuando debuté quería enfrentar a los mejores, dar las peleas que luego se recordaran. Pero ahora veo que las cosas son diferentes. Los mejores evitan a los mejores y se quedan como campeones de sus organismos. Comparando, era mejor ser amateur. Ahí solo había uno: el campeón olímpico”, dijo a HuffPost Voces el campeón en Atenas 2004, quien verá acción este fin de semana al enfrentar al invicto Darley Perez en el Bell Center de Quebec, Canadá.

En un duelo televisado por HBO, el isleño defenderá la corona interina Superpluma de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo por primera ocasión.

Gamboa aseguró que aunque ya se acostumbró a que le rehuyan, aún siente frustración de encontrarse no sólo con peleadores que evitan los buenos duelos, sino promotores y managers que protegen a sus peleadores.

Desde su debut en el 2007, el 'Ciclón de Guantánamo' ha mantenido su récord sin mancha (en 22 encuentros) pero asegura le gustaría arriesgar esa calidad por dar grandes batallas ante los nombres fuertes dentro de la división.

“No dejaré de insistir. Hay muchos nombres. Ahora el que está en turno es Darley Pérez, no hay presión por mantenerme invicto. Me he preparado fuerte y voy desarrollándome como boxeador. Pero claro que en mi mente están los nombres de Takashi Uchiyama, Argenis Méndez, Román Martínez o Takashi Miura”, finalizó el peleador.

Yuriorkis compartirá cartel este fin de semana con el estadounidense Chad Dawson, quien defenderá por primera ocasión la corona Semipesada del Consejo Mundial del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo, ante el canadiense Adonis Stevenson.
