MONACO (AP) — Rafael Nadal y Novak Djokovic reeditarán su duelo del año pasado cuando se enfrenten el domingo en la final del Masters de Montecarlo.

Nadal buscará su noveno título de Montecarlo luego de vencer 6-3, 7-6 (3) al francés Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, mientras que Djokovic va por su primera corona aquí tras despachar 6-2, 6-1 al italiano Fabio Fognini.

El serbio no dio señales de que le moleste el tobillo derecho, el que se torció hace dos semanas en la Copa Davis y que mantuvo en duda su participación en Montecarlo hasta el último momento.

Nadal ha avanzado a cinco finales consecutivas desde que regresó a las canchas, tras una ausencia de siete meses por una lesión en la rodilla izquierda, y va por su cuarto trofeo del año.

El español y Djokovic no se enfrentan desde la final del Abierto de Francia del año pasado, ganada por Nadal.

Tsonga levantó cuatro puntos de partido y remontó un 5-1 en el segundo set hasta llevarlo al desempate, que estaba 3-3 hasta que el francés empezó a cometer errores no forzados al apurar sus tiros.

Nadal selló su 46to triunfo consecutivo en Montecarlo con un winner de derecha, y ahora buscará extender su récord de trofeos de Masters a 23.

El francés comenzó de maravillas pero desperdició tres puntos de quiebre en el cuarto game, incluyendo uno en el que Nadal enganchó una pelota cerca de sus tobillo y la devolvió pegada a la línea.

"Jugó extremadamente bien hoy, eso es lo que yo llamo la suerte de campeón", comentó Tsonga. "Los mejores jugadores pueden hacer eso".

Tsonga quedó evidentemente desconcertado y perdió su siguiente saque sin ofrecer mucha resistencia. Luego empezó a desmoronarse, y cometió 17 errores no forzados en el primer set, comparado con apenas cuatro de Nadal.

Parecía que Nadal ganaría el segundo incluso más rápido, al robarle el servicio para poner arriba 2-0, y después tuvo tres match points cuando estaba en 5-2.

Tsonga levantó esos tres puntos de partido y remontó hasta llevar la manga al desempate, donde de nuevo se desplomó con errores no forzados.

"Siempre trato de ser agresivo cuando lo enfrento, es la única forma que puedo hacerlo. Si soy pasivo, no tengo forma de ganar", señaló Tsonga.

La última derrota de Nadal en Montecarlo fue en 2003 ante el argentino Guillermo Coria. El español no jugó en 2004 por lesión.

Por su parte, Fognini cometió 26 errores no forzados y fue abucheado al salir de la cancha, tras su primera semifinal de un torneo Masters.
