INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kevin Ware, jugador del equipo de básquetbol de la Universidad de Louisville, sufrió el domingo un terrible lesión que le dejó con la pierna fractura durante la final de la región del Medio Oeste del baloncesto universitario en Estados Unidos.

La pierna derecha de Ware de dobló en tal espantoso ángulo que la cadena de televisión CBS dejó de transmitir las repeticiones poco después de la caída durante el partido contra la Universidad de Duke.

La lesión provocó un silencio estupefacto en el Estadio Lucas Oil, mientras que el entrenador Rick Pitino se secaba las lágrimas y sus compañeros de equipo lloraban desconsolados.

Los espectadores que vieron la lesión en la televisión reaccionaron en las redes sociales, con la etiqueta KevinWare como uno de los principales temas en Twitter. El video de la lesión fue colocado en YouTube. CBS inicialmente mostró la repetición dos veces, y después no más.

Con 6 minutos y 33 segundos por jugarse en la primera mitad, Ware salió a defender ante el intento de triple de Tyler Thornton. La pierna de Ware se enganchó al caer, doblándose casi en ángulo recto.

Funcionarios universitarios dijeron que Ware fue llevado al Hospital Metodista con una fractura en su pierna derecha. El portavoz de la Universidad de Louisville, Kenny Klein, dijo que personal médico le dijo a la escuela que Ware "descansaba cómodamente" y que el dolor estaba "bajo control".

Ware fue sacado de la cancha en camilla.

La lesión ocurrió frente a Pitino y la banca de Louisville, y varios se vieron abrumados. Wayne Blackshear cayó al suelo llorando, y Chane Behanan se veía como si fuera a enfermarse en la cancha, hincándose con sus manos y pies en el suelo.

Louisville ganó el partido por 85-63 y avanzó al "Final Four". Louisville se medirá con Wichita State el próximo sábado en el Georgia Dome de Atlanta, mientras que Michigan se enfrentará con Syracuse en el otro duelo.
