Bajo una gran nevada que cayó en Denver, Colorado, durante todo el partido, la selección de Estados Unidos consiguió su primera victoria del hexagonal final, luego de imponerse a la escuadra de Costa Rica por la mínima diferencia y meterse de lleno a la pelea por un boleto para Brasil 2014.
Debido a las condiciones climatológicas que prevalecieron durante todo el encuentro, el juego dio inicio de manera atropellada, pues ambos conjuntos no lograron adaptarse a la cancha; pero en la primera media hora Estados Unidos fue el que llevó la iniciativa, pero sin llegar mucho al marco.
Sin embargo, en uno de estos arribos logró ponerle número a la pizarra al minuto 16 por medio de Clint Dempsey, quien aprovechó un rebote defensivo a tiro de Altidore para mandar el balón a fondo de la portería.
Costa Rica pudo reaccionar al final, pues logró llegar con mucho peligro por las bandas, siendo Bolaños, Bryan Oviedo y Saborío los hombres que llegaron con disparos, pero en el fondo el portero Guzan logró evitar la caída de su marco.
El segundo tiempo fue parejo, pero ahora el cuadro costarricense fue el que mejor se adaptó a las condiciones del terreno de juego, pues fue el que arribó con mayor peligro, incluso el silbante tuvo que suspender el cotejo por cinco minutos por la fuerte tormenta de nieve que estuvo cayendo.
Costa Rica se vio por momentos superior al cuadro de Estados Unidos, incluso en este periodo sufrió la anulación de un gol, luego de un claro fuera de lugar de uno de sus delanteros.
El partido al final se tornó difícil para los dos equipos, ya que la tormenta arreció, por lo que el silbante lo dio por terminado y, de este modo, el cuadro del timonel Jurguen Klinsmann consiguió sus primeros tres puntos del hexagonal.
