Decenas de miles de cubanos hicieron una larga y zigzagueante fila de horas este jueves para rendir homenaje al fallecido líder venezolano Hugo Chávez, un aliado que los apoyó en los tiempos duros.


Las autoridades colocaron un enorme fotografía del rostro Chávez con su tradicional camisa roja en el Memorial a José Martí de la Plaza de la Revolución, por donde fueron desfilando uno a uno hombres y mujeres de todas las edades.


La imagen estaba rodeada de coronas de flores blancas y rojas enviadas por los hermanos Fidel y Raúl Castro.


Durante toda la jornada se montó además al lado de la fotografía una guardia de honor.


"Estamos aquí todos con él. No puedo expresar mucho, pero quiero decir 'Siempre con Chávez''', dijo a la AP la cubana Violeta Lugo de 47 años.

Algunas personas se detenían unos segundos o se persignaban, otras se cuadraban en gesto militar y unas pocas incluso lloraban.


Martha López y Regina Arioza, de 76 y 78 años se vistieron de rojo, soportaron la larga cola y rindieron su homenaje compungidas. "Estamos aquí por Chávez y por ese bravo pueblo como dice su himno".


Los gestos de solidaridad a Chávez se extendieron por todo el país y el presidente Raúl Castro , quien se encontraba en la ciudad de Santiago, a unos 800 kilómetros al este de la capital, puso una rosa blanca frente a una foto del venezolano y se cuadró.


Poco después el mandatario cubano viajó a Caracas para participar de las honras finales del fallecido gobernante.


Chávez se ha "introducido en la historia de su país y de nuestro país", dijo Castro en declaraciones antes de partir.


"Lo que logramos avanzar con la influencia de él en estos pocos años no (lo) retrocedamos", expresó en reconocimiento de la importancia que la relación con Venezuela tiene para la isla. "El pueblo venezolano sabrá defender sus conquistas y nosotros como hasta ahora estaremos junto a ellos, rodilla en tierra".


El vicepresidente Miguel Díaz-Canel abrió el homenaje en La Habana, en donde también estuvieron los miembros del cuerpo diplomático.


Chávez "es un hijo de la revolución caribeña y latinoamericana. Parafraseando a mi primer ministro: ha sido una luz que apuntaba adonde debemos seguir", expresó a periodistas el embajador de San Vicente y las Granadinas, Dexter Rose.


Poco después la representante argentina Juliana Marino dijo que a pesar del duro golpe que sufrió Venezuela con la pérdida de Chávez estaba segura de que se daría continuidad a las ideas del fallecido mandatario. "Veo a un pueblo triste, pero no a un pueblo huérfano".


Muchos de los cubanos que pasaron por la Plaza de la Revolución recordaron agradecidos la solidaridad que el gobernante mostró con Cuba, a donde llegó en los años 90 en plena crisis y a la cual benefició mediante la venta con créditos blandos de petróleo --vital para la isla-- y en general acuerdos en todos los sectores estratégicos como telecomunicaciones, pesca, níquel o alimentos.


Más el acuerdo firmado a comienzo de los 2000 que permitió que miles cooperantes cubanos médicos y técnicos trabajen en Venezuela en los programas sociales impulsados por Chávez y quienes luego apoyan a sus familias con dinero o trayendo en sus viajes de descanso a la isla equipos electrodomésticos, computadoras, repuestos para autos o ropa.


Cuando fue elegido presidente en 1998, Chávez dejó claro que no estaba dispuesto a aislar a Cuba y por el contrario se convirtió en un aliado y amigo de Fidel Castro, quien lo veía como su sucesor latinoamericano.


La buena química entre ambos líderes fue siempre evidente y ambos se constituyeron en un eje que le dio fuerza y coordinó a otros gobiernos de izquierda en estas décadas en claro enfrentamiento a las políticas de Estados Unidos para la región.


El comercio de bienes binacional fue de unos 8.000 millones de dólares en 2011 --última cifra disponible-- y Venezuela es el primer socio comercial de Cuba.


Aunque la dependencia de Venezuela es notable, no lo es tanto como la isla lo fue de la Unión Soviética en la década de los años 90 debido a que la isla fue también diversificándose en mercados y socios con China y otras naciones latinoamericanas y europeas.


La amistad entre los líderes cubanos y Chávez era tal que el venezolano fue diagnosticado en la isla de su cáncer y aquí tratado desde 2011 hasta casi el final de su vida.


"Es una pérdida irreparable, grande", expresó Jesús Alfonso un empleado de la construcción de 43 años. "No creo que afecte la vida de los cubanos, él dejó las bases hechas para que esto siga avanzando y me tenemos confianza en (el presidente a cargo Nicolás) Maduro".


El periódico oficial Granma fue publicado solo en color negro el miércoles y jueves; y debido al duelo oficial --que durará hasta el viernes-- los espectáculos públicos y festejos fueron suspendidos en Cuba, mientras la bandera se subirá solo a media asta.


"El impacto es desgarrador también para nuestro pueblo", dijo la traductora de 56 años María Martínez, quien asistió a la Plaza de la Revolución cubana porque era "un deber" despedir a Chávez. "Pero confiamos en el futuro, lo más importante es tener fe, cristiana o ideológica", agregó.
