Con una polémica decisión arbitral, que terminó con la expulsión de Nani, el conjunto del Real Madrid vino de atrás y logró darle la vuelta al marcador para vencer 2-1 al equipo de Manchester United en Old Trafford, dejando una pizarra global de 3-2; de este modo, eliminó al cuadro de Alex Ferguson de la Champions League.

El cuadro merengue, junto al cuadro alemán del Borussia Dortmund -que venció al Shaktar Donetsk-, se convirtieron en los primeros equipos en avanzar a las cuartos de final de la competición continental.

Así vimos el partido minuto a minuto

EL JUEGO
El conjunto del Real Madrid, sabedor de llegar con la desventaja en el marcador global, salió con el objetivo de tener más tiempo el balón, lo cual consiguió en los primeros 10 minutos; sin embargo, no tuvo la profundidad requerida para hacer daño, por lo que solamente se tuvo que conformar con disparos de Ronaldo e Higuaín.

Pero poco a poco el cuadro local empezó a tener más confianza y logró tener su primer arribo, el cual llegó en los botines de Robin van Persie en una volea, pero la zaga merengue se empleó a fondo y mandó a tiro de esquina.

A pesar de que la escuadra madrileña se agenció el balón, ManU tuvo más profundidad en sus arribos, pues el minuto 20 en un tiro de esquina estrelló la pelota en el poste izquierdo de López, luego de que Nemanja Vidic recibió un excelente centro de Nani por el lado derecho.

La escuadra de Ferguson siguió siendo mejor, pues le cerró todos los espacios al cuadro español; sin embargo, los madrileños lograron generar peligro al 31' en una pelota filtrada para Higuaín, pero el portero De Gea tapó bien la redonda cuando se encontraba solo con el delantero.

Mas lo mejor de los Diablos llegó al 35' en una doble atajada del portero López, quien con buena estirada paró un escopetazo de Van Persie y todavía se dio tiempo para también atajar el disparo de Welbeck.

En los minutos finales de la primera parte, el Manchester United controló mejor las acciones, por lo que ambos equipos se fueron al descanso con el empate a cero goles.

Para el segundo periodo, la escuadra local no tardó mucho para ponerle número a la pizarra, luego de que al 47' en una buena jugada roja, donde se hizo una melé en el área madrileña, la cual terminó con un centro raso del lado derecho de Nani para Welbeck, quien desvió la pelota pero la terminó metiendo en su propia portería Sergio Ramos.

Con el gol en contra, Real Madrid se fue con todo en busca de la anotación del empate, pero se quedó sin mucha idea para conseguirlo; sin embargo, al 58' la escuadra del Manchester se quedó con un hombre menos, luego de la rigurosa expulsión de Nani por parte del silbante.

Real Madrid se volcó en el área de los Diablos y al 61' estuvo a punto de la anotación, después de un cabezazo de Varane en el área grande y en la última línea salvó Rafael.

Pero tanta insistencia tuvo su recompensa al minuto 65 con el gol del ingresado Lukas Modric, quien fuera del área grande sacó disparo de derecha que de carambola se fue a las redes, luego de pegar primero en el poste izquierdo de De Gea.

Mas el gol de la voltereta no tardó en llegar, pues cuatro minutos después Cristiano Ronaldo lo consiguió en un tiro-centro raso de Gonzalo Higuaín, quien recibió un excelente pase de Ozil por entrar solo por la banda derecha.

El conjunto inglés, con la pizarra en contra, se fue con todo para buscar la anotación del empate, sabedor que ahora el marcador lo ponía eliminado de la competición, por lo que al 83' y 84' Diego López salvó su meta, luego de llegadas peligrosas de Michael Carrick y Robin van Persie, respectivamente.

En los minutos finales, la escuadra del Real Madrid estuvo más cerca del tercero, después de que Kaka estrelló la redonda en el poste derecho de De Gea, por lo que el tiempo se le fue escapando a los Diablos, que todavía puderon igualar en otro cabezazo, mas el portero López cerró su gran actuación con broche de oro con otra gran parada.
