LONDRES (AP) — Manchester United y Real Madrid se juegan el martes su permanencia en la Liga de Campeones entonados por notables victorias durante el fin de semana.

Real Madrid luce en gran forma luego de apuntarse su segundo triunfo en una semana ante el Barcelona, al que venció 2-1 en la liga española el sábado tras doblegarlo 3-1 a mitad de semana en la Copa del Rey.

Man U, que hará de local en su estadio Old Trafford, viene de golear 4-0 al Norwich en la Liga Premier, que comanda con amplia ventaja.

Los ingleses tienen cierta ventaja después de empatarle 1-1 al equipo merengue en el Santiago Bernabéu. Un 0-0 les daría el pase a los cuartos de final pues el tanto de visitante valdría por dos.

Su técnico Alex Ferguson dice que no hay que confiarse.

"Si no nos anotan, avanzamos. Pero estoy seguro de que los dos vamos a anotar. Solo espero que nosotros marquemos más goles que ellos", expresó. "Son dos de los mejores equipos del mundo. Habrá mucha tensión y estoy seguro de que será un gran partido".

El Real Madrid que enfrentará Man U será probablemente muy distinto al que encontró en el Bernabéu. Llega agrandado por sus dos triunfos sobre Barcelona y con un Cristiano Ronaldo en estupenda forma.

Esas dos victorias alejaron algunos fantasmas y acallaron los rumores de que el técnico José Mourinho podía irse en cualquier momento debido al flojo desempeño del equipo en la liga española, en la que está a 13 puntos del líder Barcelona a pesar de su victoria. Si el equipo no avanza en la Champions, no obstante, los aires de crisis podrían volver.

"Estamos en un buen momento y cuando jugamos como equipo es difícil ganarnos", comentó el defensor merengue Pepe. "La victoria (del sábado) fue importante, nos dio esperanzas con miras al partido del martes".

Mientras que Mourinho dejó en el banco a varios jugadores importantes, incluidos Cristiano Ronaldo, quien lleva marcados 39 goles esta temporada, Xabi Alonso, Mesut Oezil y Gonzalo Higuaín, Ferguson alineó a todos los titulares.

El estratega de Manchester estaba feliz con la actuación del equipo en Madrid.

"Pudimos haber anotado cinco o seis goles. Robin van Persie dejó escapar dos grandes ocasiones y su arquero hizo un par de buenas atajadas", manifestó.

Para avanzar, Man U tendrá que encontrar la forma de frenar a Cristiano Ronaldo, un ex jugador del club.

"Los contragolpes (de Real Madrid) fueron letales", afirmó Ferguson. "Habrá que buscar la forma de contrarrestarlos".

Los triunfos en el clásico español aliviaron las presiones sobre Mourinho, quien es mencionado a menudo como sucesor de Ferguson en Man U cuando el estratega, de 71 años, decida jubilarse.

"Sigo siendo el técnico" del Mancheser United, dijo Ferguson cuando se le planteó el tema.

Mourinho, quien protagonizó un episodio memorable al deslizarse de rodillas a un costado del terreno de juego luego de una larga corrida junto a la raya cuando su Porto le ganó al Man U en el 2004, dijo que se portará bien en Old Trafford.

"Era mi primera temporada en la Liga de Campeones. Ahora tengo más de 100 partidos", expresó. "Creo que puedo controlar mejor mis emociones. Si perdemos mañana no lloraré y si ganamos no haré otra corrida de 100 metros".

Es previsible que durante el encuentro se viva un momento de gran emoción para los aficionados del Man U, pues se da por descontado que Ferguson hará jugar al menos unos minutos a Ryan Giggs, en la que será su milésima presentación oficial a nivel de club o selección.

"Su experiencia en partidos importantes será vital para nosotros", dijo Ferguson.

Otro momento emotivo será seguramente el retorno de Cristiano Ronaldo a Old Trafford. El portugués jugó varios años con Manchester United antes de pasar al Real Madrid.

"Tendrá un gran recibimiento por todo lo que hizo con Manchester United", pronosticó el capitán del Man U Patrice Evra. "Los hinchas jamás olvidarán lo que hizo. Además, él sigue teniéndole un gran cariño al club".

"Recuerdo que después del partido en Madrid conversamos un poco. Me dijo que sería difícil regresar aquí. Esta es su casa. Será muy emocionante", agregó.

Evra, no obstante, dijo que "si (Cristiano) puede ganarle al Manchester United, lo hará, porque es un gran competidor, un ganador".

Esta semana se registrará además el retorno de David Beckham a la Liga de Campeones, ahora con el París Saint Germain, que el miércoles recibirá al Valencia, al que ya le ganó 2-1 afuera. Los franceses no podrán contar con Zlatan Ibrahimovic, suspendido tras su expulsión en los momentos finales de ese duelo.

Beckham, quien se incorporó hace poco al PSG, arrancará seguramente en el banco.

El inglés no juega en el torneo continental desde que lo hizo en la edición del 2009-10 con el Milan. Beckham ha jugado parte de los últimos tres partidos del PSG.

El martes se decidirá la serie entre Shakhtar Donetsk y Borussia Dormund, que está igualada 2-2. Los alemanes serán locales en la revancha.

El miércoles, en tanto, Juventus recibirá a un Celtic al que ya le ganó 3-0 afuera.

La semana que viene, Barcelona intentará remontar en casa la derrota 2-0 que sufrió ante el Milan. Bayern Munich recibirá a un Arsenal al que doblegó 3-1 afuera, Málaga procurará remontar en casa una desventaja 1-0 ante Porto y Schalke recibirá a un Galatasaray con el que igualó 1-1 de visitante.
