HONG KONG (AP) — Fauja Singh, el maratonista de más edad del mundo, concluyó el domingo su última carrera a los 101 años, tras correr la carrera de 10 kilómetros (6,25 millas) del Maratón de Hong Kong.

Singh, quien profesa el sijismo, cronometró 1 hora, 32 minutos y 28 segundos.

Con un turbante color azafrán y una larga barba blanca, Singh siguió la ruta a lo largo del borde norte de la isla de Hong Kong y estuvo acompañado de un grupo de sijes de la comunidad local. En el maratón participaron otras 72.000 personas.

El maratonista de origen indio, apodado "Torpedo Turbante", dijo que le gustaría dejar de correr después de la carrera en esta ciudad china, poco antes de cumplir 102 años.

"Recordaré este día. Lo extrañaré", dijo Singh poco después de cruzar la línea de meta.

El bisabuelo se convirtió en el hombre de mayor edad en correr un maratón completo en Toronto en 2011 a la edad de 100 años. Pero su hazaña, no fue reconocida en los récords mundiales Guinness porque Singh no tiene un certificado de nacimiento para demostrar su edad. Singh tiene un pasaporte británico que muestra que nació el 1 de abril de 1911.
