La entrega anual número 85 de los Premios de la Academia se llevó a cabo en el Dolby Theatre de Los Angeles, Calif, con Seth MacFarlane ("Family Guy", "Ted") como el conductor de este año. Aunque venía como la más nominada de la noche, "Lincoln" no fue la más premiada. Ese título fue para "Life of Pi", de Ang Lee, quien sorprendió como Mejor Director. "Argo" ganó tres premios Óscar, incluyendo la más importante, Mejor Película. Daniel Day-Lewis y Jennifer Lawrence se erigieron como los mejores actores del año, mientras que en el rubro de reparto triunfaron Anne Hathaway y Christoph Waltz. MacFarlane comenzó su monólogo de presentación con el curioso mensaje de: "La misión de hacer reír a Tommy Lee Jones comienza ahora", recordando cuando el actor de "Lincoln" fue pillado por las cámaras en los Golden Globes con cara de pocos amigos. También realizó bromas contra Chris Brown y Rihanna y comentando que la controversia de "Django Unchained" con la palabra racista contra afroamericanos estaba basada en los mensajes de voz de Mel Gibson.

Luego llegaron los momentos musicales, cuando William Shatner, emulando su personaje de "Star Trek" apareció en una pantalla para advertirle que venía del futuro y que todos se quejaban al día siguiente de que había hecho un terrible trabajo como conductor. Finalmente, Octavia Spencer, ganadora de Mejor Actriz de Reparto por "The Help" el año pasado, se encargó de entregar el primer premio de la noche, Mejor Actor de Reparto. Christoph Waltz, de "Django Unchained", ganó su segundo Oscar en esta categoría, tras ganar por "Inglourious Basterds", también de Quentin Tarantino. Él venció a Tommy Lee Jones, Robert De Niro, Philip Seymour Hoffman y Alan Arkin.

Paul Rudd y Melissa McCarthy anunciaron las categorías de Corto Animado, en donde resultó ganadora "Paperman" y Mejor Cinta Animada, que fue para "Brave", de Pixar. El co-director Mark Andrews aceptó el honor usando una kilt, la típica falda escocesa. Vencieron a "Wreck-It Ralph", "Frankenweenie", "Pirates: Band of Misfits" y "ParaNorman".

El elenco de "The Avengers" Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner y Samuel L. Jackson se reencontraron para bromear en el escenario y presentar un par de categorías. La primera de ellas fue la gran victoria para el chileno Claudio Miranda, quien finalmente obtuvo su anhelado Oscar por Mejor Fotografía, gracias a "Life of Pi". Halle Berry, quien ya fue una chica Bond, se encargó de presentar el segmento para festejar al agente 007, y Dame Shirley Bassey, quien grabó las canciones de las cintas "Goldfinger", "Diamonds Are Forever" y "Moonraker", llevó al público de pie con su interpretación.

Los protagonistas de "Django Unchained", Jamie Foxx y Kerry Washington, entregaron Mejor Cortometraje a "Curfew" y, otro triunfo para los latinos, el Documental "Inocente" de Sean Fine y Andrea Nix Fine. Al actor no le causó gracia, ya que criticó su conducción comentando que: "me gustaba cómo ibas hasta ahora, ya le diste la vuelta". Ben nombró a "Searching For Sugar Man", sobre una estrella de rock de los 60 llamado Sixto Rodríguez, como el Mejor Documental - Largometraje.

Jennifer Garner y Jessica Chastain entregaron juntas la categoría de Mejor Película Extranjera. Aunque competía la chilena "No" de Pablo Larraín, lamentablemente para seguir con el festejo latino, sucumbió ante la favorita, "Amour", de Austria y el director Michael Haneke.

John Travolta subió al escenario para recordar importantes musicales en la historia del Óscar. Catherine Zeta-Jones revivió su clásico "All That Jazz" de "Chicago", mientras que Jennifer Hudson por la actuación que le mereció su premio de la Academia, "Dreamgirls". El elenco entero de "Les Miserables", comandado por Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman y Russell Crowe, culminó este momento musical.

Mark Wahlberg y el osito Ted, creación del propio MacFarlane presentaron las categorías de audio. Mejor Mezcla de Sonido fue para "Les Miserables" y, curiosamente, hubo empate en Mejor Edición de Sonido: "Zero Dark Thirty" y "Skyfall".

Christopher Plummer, ganador el año pasado en Mejor Actor de Reparto por "Beginners", presentó Mejor Actriz de Reparto. La favorita era Anne Hathaway por "Les Miserables" y como ella misma comenzó su discurso: "Se cumplió". Ella ya había estado nominada antes por Mejor Actriz en "Rachel Getting Married". Agradeció a sus contrincantes, Jackie Weaver, Helen Hunt, Amy Adams y Sally Field, a quienes dijo respetar mucho.

El primer Oscar de la noche para "Argo" vino por fin, para William Goldenberg, quien triunfó en Mejor Edición, recibido a manos de Sandra Bullock. Jennifer Lawrence luego ofreció unas palabras de presentación para la británica Adele, quien se lució interpretando el tema original de "Skyfall".

El elenco de "Chicago", Richard Gere, Renee Zellweger, Queen Latifah y Catherine Zeta-Jones se reencontró para las categorías musicales, presentando mejor música a Mychael Danna de "Life of Pi" y el tan cantado Oscar a Adele por "Skyfall".

Charlize Theron y Dustin Hoffman anunciaron las ternas de las historias. Por Mejor Guión Adaptado ganó Chris Terrio por "Argo" mientras que Guión Original fue para Quentin Tarantino por "Django Unchained", el segundo Oscar en su historia dentro de cinco nominaciones.

Otra de las grandes sorpresas de la noche fue cuando Ang Lee venció en la categoría de Mejor Director por "Life of Pi", cuando muchos esperaban que Steven Spielberg lo obtuviera por "Lincoln". Es el segundo Oscar en la historia del cineasta, y le fue entregado por Michael Douglas y Jane Fonda.

En la batalla donde se consideraba a Jessica Chastain y Jennifer Lawrence como las favoritas, quien se llevó el Óscar a casa fue esta última por "Silver Linings Playbook", pero no sin antes protagonizar un vergonzoso momento en el que se cayó de bruces al subir los escalones.

Meryl Streep, triunfadora el año pasado en Mejor Actriz, no perdió tiempo alguno en anunciar que el favorito, Daniel Day-Lewis, obtenía el tercer Óscar en su carrera como Mejor Actor por "Lincoln", más que cualquier otro protagonista masculino. Bromeó que él iba a interpretar a Margaret Thatcher, como Meryl, y que ella era la primera opción de Spielberg para ser el ex presidente estadounidense.

Jack Nicholson sería el último presentador de la noche, pero dio la sorpresa de que Michelle Obama en realidad anunciaría al ganador de Mejor Película, la cual fue "Argo". Los productores de la película, George Clooney, Grant Heslov y Ben Affleck aceptaron el Oscar, y Affleck, actor y director de la cinta, entregó un discurso tremendamente emotivo y ansioso en el cual se palpaba su felicidad.

Cerrando el show, MacFarlane se acompañó de Kristin Chenoweth en una canción para animar a los perdedores de la noche.
