PRETORIA, Sudáfrica (AP) — El mejor detective de Sudáfrica fue elegido el jueves para encabezar la investigación del caso por asesinato contra Oscar Pistorius, en reemplazo de un veterano policía al que le radicaron cargos por intento de homicidio en otro giro inesperado del escándalo que mantiene a esa nación en vilo.

La comisionada de la policía nacional, Riah Phiyega, prometió que un grupo de "talentosos y experimentados" oficiales investigarán el caso del famoso atleta.

La decisión de asignar el caso al teniente general Vinesh Moonoo se produjo poco después que se supo que el investigador a cargo, Hilton Botha, encara acusaciones por intento de homicidio, y un día después que ofreció un testimonio adverso para la fiscalía en la audiencia de fianza.

Pistorius, el primer corredor con las piernas amputadas que compite en unos Juegos Olímpicos, mató a balazos a su novia Reeva Steenkamp en la madrugada del Día de San Valentín. El velocista alega que disparó a la puerta cerrada del baño porque pensó que adentro había un ladrón.

La fiscalía dice que el tiroteo ocurrió después que la pareja había tenido una discusión, por lo que acusó a Pistorius de asesinato premeditado.

Botha admitió el miércoles en la audiencia judicial que no hay contradicciones entre la versión de Pistorius y lo que la policía descubrió en la escena. También reconoció que la policía dejó un casquillo de bala en el baño y que perdió la pista de munición supuestamente ilegal que halló en la casa del atleta.

Botha fue sacado del caso, pero no fue suspendido, dijo Phiyega, y todavía podría ser citado a testificar por la defensa de Pistorius cuando empiece el juicio.

"Este asunto es de prioridad nacional", comentó Phiyega a los periodistas poco después del final del tercer día de las audiencias de fianza. El caso despertó interés en todo el mundo y ha puesto la lupa sobre el sistema judicial sudafricano.

Bulewa Makeke, vocera de la fiscalía nacional de Sudáfrica, indicó que los cargos por intento de homicidio contra Botha fueron radicados nuevamente el 4 de febrero, aunque la policía dijo que se enteró al respecto después que el detective testificó en la audiencia del miércoles.

Botha y otros dos oficiales de la policía encaran siete cargos por intento de homicidio por un incidente de 2011 en el que supuestamente balearon un autobús.

Cuando le preguntaron sobre el desempeño de Botha en la investigación, Phiyega dijo que la policía sudafricana "no tiene nada que envidiarle" a otras del mundo.

Antes que Botha fuese sacado del caso, Makeke opinó que el detective tenía que ser cambiado, aunque aclaró que esa era una decisión de la policía.

Makeke dijo que los cargos contra Botha fueron radicados nuevamente porque se recopiló más evidencia. Señaló que la acusación inicialmente fue desestimada porque "no había suficiente evidencia en ese momento".

En tanto, el principal patrocinador de Pistorius, Nike, anunció la suspensión de su contrato con la estrella paralímpica. La firma de gafas Oakley también había suspendido su patrocinio.

En la audiencia de fianza del jueves en Pretoria, el magistrado Desmond Nair preguntó a la defensa de Pistorius: "¿Creen que habrá algún nivel de sorpresa si el acusado es liberado?".

El abogado Barry Roux respondió: "Creo que habrá sorpresa en este país si no es liberado".

El fiscal Gerrie Nel, quien se opone a que Pistorius pueda salir libre bajo fianza, describió a un hombre "capaz y listo para disparar y matar", y sostuvo que las muestras de arrepentimiento de Pistorius no significan que el corredor no quiso matar a su novia.

"Incluso si planificas un asesinato, lo planificas y disparas. Si disparas, vas a tener arrepentimiento. El arrepentimiento puede empezar de inmediato", dijo Nel.

Tan pronto Nel empezó a hablar, Pistorius comenzó a sollozar, y fue consolado por su hermano Carl Pistorius.

"El (Pistorius) quiere seguir con su vida como su esto no hubiese pasado", continuó Nel, lo que provocó que Pistorius negara con la cabeza. "El motivo por el que usted dispara cuatro veces es para matar", agregó.

Roux siguió criticando el caso de la fiscalía y la investigación, un día después que Botha admitió haber dejado una bala en el baño, haberle perdido la pista a otras balas halladas en la casa, y haber caminado por la escena del crimen sin protección en los zapatos, lo que podría haber contaminado el área.

"La mala calidad de la evidencia ofrecida por el oficial Botha demuestra las fallas desastrosas en el caso del gobierno", sentenció Roux el jueves. "No podemos confiar en que está diciendo la vedad".

Nel dijo que Pistorius no ha dado garantías de que no se irá del país si encara una sentencia de cadena perpetua, y enfatizó que el corredor no debe recibir trato especial.

"Yo soy Oscar Pistorius. Soy un atleta mundialmente famoso. ¿Es esa una circunstancia especial? No", afirmó el fiscal. "Su versión (de los hechos) es improbable".

Agregó que el tribunal debe enfocarse "en el asesinato de una mujer indefensa".

La audiencia continúa el viernes.
