Con gran actuación de los ex jugadores del Toluca Vicente Sánchez e Iván Alonso, el conjunto de Nacional de Montevideo logró vencer en el estadio Nemesio Díez a la escuadra mexiquense 3-2, propinándole de este modo su primera derrota en la Copa Libertadores de América.

Este encuentro tuvo un morbo especial por el regreso del delantero charrúa Iván Alonso a este inmueble, después de que el ariete charrúa saliera de manera polémica del cuadro de los Diablos hace más de un año, luego de que antes de comenzar el Torneo Apertura 2012 anunciara su retiro del futbol por problemas de salud, en donde su médico le había recomendado no seguir jugando y menos en la altura de Toluca.

Sin embargo, en el mes de noviembre de ese mismo año, Alonso sorpresivamente dio a conocer que, tras haberse realizado pruebas más a fondo, iba a volver a las canchas, enrolándose precisamente con el Nacional, situación que generó molestia en el cuadro del Toluca, que incluso llevó el asunto a la FIFA.

Pero en este partido, el segundo del equipo sudamericano en el certamen continental, el gol de Alonso fue al final el de la diferencia para llevarse los tres puntos y colocar al cuadro charrúa momentáneamente a encabezar la cima del Grupo Uno con cuatro unidades, dejando con tres a la escuadra de Enrique Meza.

El partido fue muy contrastante, pues el primer tiempo fue completamente del cuadro local, pero su futbol solo le alcanzó para conseguir un gol, el cual llegó al minuto 21 por medio de un cabezazo del panameño Luis Tejada.

Pero el segundo tiempo fue otro, pues la escuadra de Nacional salió con mayor ambición y en los primeros minutos encontró el gol de la igualada por conducto de Vicente Sánchez al 46', luego de un regalo del portero Talavera, quien le dejó el balón a modo en el área chica.

Y a pesar de que Toluca al 52' retomó la ventaja por conducto del ingresado Christian Benítez, el cuadro visitante en menos de tres minutos consiguió los goles del empate y el de la voltereta, el primero de ellos llegó al 55' de nueva cuenta por Vicente Sánchez y al 57' con un zurdazo de Iván Alonso.

Toluca no reaccionó y el equipo de Nacional se acomodó mejor en la cancha y, no obstante de que el al final Toluca echó atrás a su rival, ya no tuvo la capacidad para poder conseguir el gol de la igualada, por lo que el encuentro quedó sentenciado.
