PRETORIA, Sudáfrica (AP) — Oscar Pistorius lloró el martes mientras su abogado leyó la versión del atleta de cómo mató a tiros a su novia el Día de San Valentín, alegando que la había confundido con un ladrón.
La fiscalía, sin embargo, dijo ante un tribunal abarrotado que el corredor con las piernas amputadas, conocido como "Blade Runner" por sus prótesis de fibra de carbono, disparó intencionalmente y sin piedad a la modelo Reeva Steenkamp mientras la mujer de 29 años se escondía aterrorizada dentro de un baño.
El atleta olímpico dijo en una declaración leída por su abogado durante su audiencia de fianza que se sintió vulnerable debido a que no tenía sus prótesis cuando disparó contra una puerta de un cuarto de baño cerrada con seguro.
Pero el fiscal Gerrie Nel indicó que Pistorius se tomó el tiempo de colocarse sus prótesis, caminar unos siete metros desde la cama hasta el baño, y luego abrió fuego. Tres de las cuatro balas que disparó a la puerta del baño impactaron a Steenkamp, dijo Nel.
Pistorius dijo en su declaración jurada que después de disparar a la puerta se dio cuenta que Steenkamp no estaba en su cama.
"Sentí horror y miedo", relató Pistorius. Dijo que entonces se puso sus prótesis, intentó derribar la puerta y finalmente la forzó con un bate de cricket para encontrar a Steenkamp baleada dentro del baño. Dijo que la cargó y bajó las escaleras a toda prisa para buscar ayuda médica, pero ya era muy tarde.
"Ella murió en mis brazos", indicó.
La muerte conmocionó a muchos en Sudáfrica y otros lugares del mundo que idolatraban a Pistorius por superar las adversidades para convertirse en un campeón que llegó a competir en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres el año pasado, además de correr en los paralímpicos. Steenkamp era una modelo, graduada como abogada, que debutó en un reality de televisión que fue emitido el sábado, dos días después de su muerte.
Nel radicó cargos por asesinato premeditado contra Pistorius, y dijo que el atleta disparó después de tener una discusión con la modelo.
"Ella no podía ir a ningún lado. No podía escapar", planteó Nel. "Tiene que haber sido espantoso".
El cargo de asesinato premeditado tiene una sentencia obligatoria de cadena perpetua.
El juez Desmond Nair determinó que Pistorius debe enfrentar los requisitos de fianza más estrictos contemplados en la legislación sudafricana. Eso significa que los abogados de Pistorius deben ofrecer razones "excepcionales" para que el atleta quede en libertad bajo fianza en espera del juicio, aparte de simplemente entregar sus dos pasaportes sudafricanos y depositar fianza.
Pistorius sollozaba suavemente mientras su abogado, Barry Roux, insistía en que los disparos fueron un accidente y que no había prueba alguna para fundamentar el cargo de homicidio.
"¿Fue a matarla o fue a sacarla?", preguntó Roux al referirse a la puerta dañada a balazos. "Declaramos que esto no es un asesinato".
El abogado dijo que el estado no ha presentado pruebas de que la pareja hubiera tenido una pelea ni ha ofrecido un motivo para el crimen.
El fiscal Nel respondió: "el motivo es 'quiero matar'''.
Los exabruptos emocionales de Pistorius desempeñaron de nuevo un papel en la audiencia, como lo hicieron en la audiencia inicial el viernes. A un punto, Nair paró el proceso cuando Pistorius estaba sollozando mientras Roux leía una porción de las declaraciones del deportista que describía cómo Steenkamp le había comprado un regalo por el Día de San Valentín, pero no le dejó abrirlo la víspera.
"Mantenga la compostura", dijo el juez. "Tiene que controlarse". Con voz temblorosa, Pistorius respondió: "Sí, su excelencia".
Declaraciones juradas de amigos de Pistorius y Steenkamp leídas en voz alta por Roux en la audiencia describieron a ambos como una pareja feliz y encantadora. La noche antes de la muerte, dijeron, Pistorius y Steenkamp habían cancelado planes separados para pasarse la víspera de San Valentín e la casa del atleta.
En las afueras del tribunal, varias decenas de mujeres cantaban lemas contra la violencia doméstica y portaban carteles llamando a que se le negase fianza a Pistorius. "Pistorius debe podrirse en la cárcel", decía un cartel.
Sudáfrica tiene una de las peores tasas de violencia contra mujeres en el mundo, y la tasa más alta de mujeres asesinadas por su pareja, de acuerdo con un estudio del Medical Research Council. Otro estudio del consejo estima que una mujer o un menor es violado cada cuatro minutos. Al menos tres mujeres son asesinadas cada día por su pareja en este país de 50 millones de habitantes, dijo la profesora Rachel Jewkes, miembro de la organización.
Steenkamp hizo campaña activa contra la violencia de pareja y planeaba sumarse a una protesta el viernes en honor a una niña de 17 años que fue violada en pandilla y mutilada hace dos semanas.
Mientras surgían detalles durante la dramática audiencia en la capital, el cuerpo de Steenkamp era cremado el martes en una ceremonia en la ciudad portuaria de Port Elizabeth. La familia dijo que varios de sus miembros llegaron de diversas partes del mundo.
Seis personas portaron el féretro, cubierto con una tela blanca y flores blancas, para llevarlo al interior de una iglesia para un servicio privado.
Pistorius se convirtió en 2012 en el primer competidor de pista con las dos piernas amputadas que participa en unos Juegos Olímpicos.
