PRETORIA, Sudáfrica (AP) — Los planes de Oscar Pistorius de competir esta temporada empezaron a diluirse tras la acusación de homicidio en su contra, al tiempo que crece la posibilidad de que el corredor olímpico amputado de ambas piernas nunca vuelva a las pistas con sus afamadas prótesis de fibra de carbono.

El agente de Pistorius empezó a cancelar las carreras del velocista sudafricano, después que fuese acusado de matar a tiros a su novia, Reeva Steenkamp.

Peet van Zyl informó a The Associated Press que el sábado canceló el contrato para una revancha contra el brasileño Alan Oliveira, otro corredor con las piernas amputadas y que tenía el propósito de promover los Juegos Olímpicos y Paralímpicos de Río 2016.

Oliveira venció a Pistorius en los 200 metros planos en los Paralímpicos de Londres el año pasado. Pistorius y Oliveira correrían 200 metros en la playa de Copacabana en Río de Janeiro el 31 de marzo.

"No puedo planear nada", dijo Van Zyl sobre los compromisos inmediatos de Pistorius, que no son una prioridad luego de la acusación de asesinato y la muerte de Steenkamp. "Lo tendré corriendo cuando esté en condiciones de hacerlo como un atleta de clase mundial. Física y mentalmente".

Unas horas antes, Van Zyl había visitado a su representado en una estación de policía en la capital de Sudáfrica, Pretoria, donde está detenido en un inmueble de ladrillo rojo y de un piso con una reja metálica verde.

Pistorius fue acusado del asesinato de Steenkamp luego que ella recibió el jueves disparos en la casa del varias veces campeón paralímpico. Los fiscales en Sudáfrica dijeron que el deportista de 26 años afronta acusaciones más graves de asesinato, con lo que Pistorius queda expuesto a la posibilidad de ser condenado con una sentencia perpetua.

Pistorius rompió en llanto durante su primera aparición en la corte el viernes. Su familia, en una declaración a The Associated Press dijo que está "devastado" y en "estado total de shock". Arnold Pistorius, tío del corredor, dijo que la familia también guardaba pesar por Steenkamp, su familia y sus amigos.

La muerte de Steenkamp y la aprehensión de Pistorius conmovieron a los sudafricanos, que veneraban al corredor por su carácter modesto y por el logro de sobreponerse a la adversidad para convertirse en un astro internacional, pese a que le amputaron las piernas cuando era bebé.

Pistorius tenía aún un "apoyo abrumador" de sus aficionados, afirmó Van Zyl cuando salía de la estación de policía Brooklyn, pero el agente eludió a un periodistas que le preguntó cuál era el estado de ánimo del velocista tras la muerte de su novia y que si Pistorius sabía que toda su carrera estaba arruinada.

Los patrocinadores de Pistorius, incluidas las marcas renombradas de Nike y Oakley, también seguían con el velocista, aseguró Van Zyl. Pero eso podría depender del desenlace de lo que posiblemente sea un prolongado juicio por homicidio.

"En cuanto a los patrocinadores y socios, puedo confirmar que en este momento, todas las partes son comprensivas y mantienen sus compromisos contractuales", informó la empresa de Van Zyl, In Site Athlete Management. "Han dicho que están contentos de dejar que el proceso jurídico tome su curso antes de adoptar cualquier cambio en su posición".

Las firmas Nike y Oakley Inc. no respondieron de inmediato a mensajes de The Associated Press solicitándoles declaraciones.
