PRETORIA, Sudáfrica (AP) — El astro paralímpico Oscar Pistorius se tapó el rostro con las manos y sollozó el viernes en la corte, mientras la fiscalía anunció que lo acusará de asesinato premeditado por la muerte de su novia modelo.
La fiscalía radicó un cargo de asesinato en el Tribunal de Pretoria por la muerte de Reeva Steenkamp, una modelo y participante en un reality show. La mujer de 30 años recibió varios disparos y falleció en la casa de Pistorius el jueves por la mañana.
El fiscal Gerrie Nel dijo el viernes en corte que el caso fue un asesinato premeditado, y agregó que la fiscalía radicará esa acusación más grave.
Steenkamp murió por varios disparos el Día de San Valentín en la casa de Pistorius, ubicada en una comunidad de acceso controlado en un suburbio de Pretoria, la capital de Sudáfrica.
Después de la audiencia, la familia de Pistorius y sus representantes en Londres emitieron un comunicado en el que disputan la acusación criminal contra el atleta de 26 años.
"El presunto asesinato es disputado en los términos más enérgicos", señala el comunicado, que no entra en detalles.
Dice que Pistorius quiere "enviarle sus condolencias más profundas a la familia de Reeva".
"También quiere expresar su gratitud a través de nosotros por todos los mensajes de respaldo que ha recibido — pero, como hemos dicho, nuestros pensamientos y oraciones deben ser para Reeva y su familia — sin importar las circunstancias de esta tragedia tan terrible", señala el documento.
Algunos que conocen a Pistorius, incluyendo una ex novia, también opinaron en las redes sociales.
Trish Taylor, padre de la ex novia de Pistorius, Samantha Taylor, escribió en Facebook: "Estoy tan feliz porque Sammy está segura y fuera de las garras de ese hombre".
Pero otra ex novia, Jenna Edkins, defendió a Pistorius el viernes en mensajes en Twitter.
"Lo único que digo es que lo dejen hablar, que dejen que cuente su historia sin llegar a conclusiones", tuiteó Edkins. Pistorius ocultó el rostro en sus manos y estalló en llanto en su primera audiencia en el tribunal de Pretoria. El magistrado Desmond Nasir retrasó la audiencia de fianza hasta el martes y miércoles, y decidió que el corredor permanezca detenido hasta entonces en una estación de la policía de Pretoria.
