PRETORIA, Sudáfrica (AP) — El velocista olímpico de piernas amputadas Oscar Pistorius fue acusado el jueves de asesinar a disparos a su novia, la modelo Reeva Steenkamp, un suceso inesperado en la vida de un héroe nacional conocido como "Blade Runner" por sus sofisticadas prótesis.

Reeva Steenkamp, una modelo que se expresó en Twitter contra las violaciones y los abusos a las mujeres, recibió cuatro balazos poco antes del amanecer en la casa de Pistorius, en una urbanización cerrada en la capital, Pretoria, informó la policía.

Horas después de ser interrogado por las autoridades, Pistorius salió de una estación policial acompañado de varios agentes, con la cabeza baja mientras los fotógrafos le tomaban imágenes y la capucha gris de su chaqueta de entrenamiento le cubría la mayor parte del rostro. Su audiencia judicial estaba pautada originalmente para el jueves por la tarde, pero fue pospuesta hasta el viernes para que los investigadores tuviesen más tiempo para trabajar, dijo Medupe Simasiku, un vocero de la fiscalía.

Los sudafricanos reaccionaron sorprendidos ante el asesinato. El diario The Star publicó una edición especial el jueves por la tarde, que se vendía en las calles de Johannesburgo, con el titular: "ARRESTAN A OSCAR: NOVIA ASESINADA".

Mientras Pistorius se convirtió en una inspiración para muchos con sus sueños olímpicos, la policía dijo que el atleta de 26 años tenía un historial problemático.

La portavoz de la policía, Denis Beukes, indicó que ya había habido "incidentes anteriores en el hogar del señor Pistorius". La policía sudafricana no identifica a los sospechosos de delitos hasta que se presentan ante un tribunal, pero Beukes señaló que el corredor estaba en su residencia en el momento de la muerte de Steenkamp y que "no hay ningún otro sospechoso".

"Sí, hay testigos y también fueron interrogados esta mañana", dijo Beukes a los reporteros reunidos frente a la urbanización cerrada donde Pistorius vive. "Estamos hablando con vecinos y personas que escucharon cosas que ocurrieron anteriormente en la noche y cuando el tiroteo ocurrió".

El padre de Pistorius, Henke, rehusó comentar al respecto cuando fue llamado por la AP, y se limitó a decir que "estamos rezando por fortaleza... para Oscar y los padres de la dama".

No fue posible conseguir al agente de Pistorius, Peet van Zyl, ni a su entrenador Ampie Louw, mientras que las llamadas al celular de Pistorius iban directo al buzón de mensajes.

El ex entrenador de Pistorius, Andrea Giannini, dijo que espera que todo se trate de un "trágico accidente".

"Oscar siempre se mantuvo tranquilo y positivo, sin importar cuán mala fuese la situación", comentó Giannini a la AP en Italia. "Aunque estuviese cansado o nervioso, siempre fue muy amable con la gente. Nunca lo vi violento".

Giannini comentó que cree que Pistorius salía con Steenkamp desde hace "algunos meses".

"Sé que tuvo más de un romance en el último año", reveló.

La policía dijo que informes anteriores de que Pistorius había confundido a Steenkamp con un ladrón no fueron emitidos por las autoridades. Varios medios de prensa sudafricanos reportaron inicialmente que los disparos podrían haber sido accidentales.

"Sería prematuro y muy irresponsable que yo dijera lo que sucedió", dijo Beukes. "Ha habido acusaciones. No estamos seguros".

Beukes agregó que había habido incidentes previos y "acusaciones de naturaleza doméstica" en la residencia del velocista olímpico a quien le faltan las dos piernas, uno de los deportistas más famosos de Sudáfrica y el mundo que hizo historia en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres el año pasado por ser el primer corredor con piernas amputadas en competir en unas Olimpíadas.

"No voy a dar más detalles, pero ha habido incidentes (anteriores en la residencia de Pistorius)", dijo Beukes.

Capacity Relations, una firma que maneja las relaciones públicas de personalidades, había identificado anteriormente a la modelo Steenkamp como la víctima de los disparos. La portavoz policial teniente coronel Katlego Mogale declaró a The Associated Press que las autoridades recibieron una llamada aproximadamente a las 3 a.m. después de los disparos.

Cuando los agentes llegaron, agregó Mogale, encontraron a varios paramédicos tratando de revivir a una mujer de unos 30 años que había recibido cuatro disparos. Mogale, que habló con AP desde el lugar de los hechos, dijo que la mujer murió en la casa.

Una pistola calibre 9 milímetros se halló en el lugar y se abrió una investigación por asesinato contra Pistorius.

Pistorius practicaba el tiro al blanco con su pistola, y una publicidad suya para la firma Nike leía: "Soy una bala en la recámara (de una pistola)". Un artículo de la revista del New York Times describió a Pistorius relatando cómo sacó una pistola para revisar su casa cuando su alarma sonó la noche antes de una entrevista. Por sugerencia de Pistorius, acompañó al periodista a un campo de tiro cercano, donde dispararon con una pistola nueve milímetros.

En un momento, Pistorius le dijo al periodista: "Creo que si practicaras, podrías ser bastante letal".

Cuando le preguntaron con cuánta frecuencia acudía al campo de tiro, el atleta respondió: "Sólo a veces, cuando no puedo dormir".

La policía no ha divulgado el nombre de la mujer, pero la publicista de Steenkamp confirmó en un comunicado que la modelo estaba muerta.

"Podemos confirmar que Reeva Steenkamp ha fallecido", dijo la publicista Sarit Tomlinson. "Estamos en contacto con gente en el lugar, por favor esperen por información oficial, hay muchas conjeturas en este momento".

"Nuestras oraciones y solidaridad están con la familia Steenkamp, que pidió que se respete su privacidad durante este momento difícil. Todos están devastados".

Tomlinson dijo que Steenkamp, conocida simplemente como Reeva, había sido elegida por la revista FHM como una de las 100 mujeres más sexy del mundo por dos años consecutivos, y apareció en numerosas campañas de publicidad nacionales e internacionales.

En Twitter, publicó mensajes exhortando a las mujeres a denunciar las violaciones, además de expresar su emoción por el Día de San Valentín. "¿Qué tienes bajo la manga para tu amor para mañana?", tuiteó. "Debe ser un día de amor para todos".

Pistorius tenía menos de un año de edad cuando le amputaron ambas piernas por debajo de la rodilla, por no tener peroné. Hizo una campaña de varios años para poder competir contra atletas no discapacitados y finalmente fue autorizado por el máximo tribunal del deporte para que participara en los principales eventos del atletismo.

Pistorius compitió por Sudáfrica en los Juegos de Londres, tanto en los 400 metros como en el relevo 4x400. También retuvo su título en los 400 metros de los Juegos Paralímpicos de Londres.
