El conjunto de Barcelona se encontró con un hueso duro de roer en el estadio de Mestalla, pues en esta ocasión su futbol solamente le alcanzó para igualar a una anotación ante el Valencia, que durante todo el cotejo fue un dolor de cabeza y que, incluso, al final se pudo haber llevado la victoria.

Desde el comienzo el cuadro culé impuso su estilo de juego; sin embargo, a sus ataques les faltó profundidad, mientras que el equipo local, sin tener mucho tiempo el balón, llegó con mucho mayor peligro al marco de Víctor Valdés.

Pero fue hasta el minuto 33 que Valencia sorpresivamente le puso número a la pizarra por conducto de Ever Banega, quien aprovechó un rebote de Gerard Piqué en el área grande para que de derecha colocar la pelota en las redes y lejó del meta Victor Valdés.

El gol despertó de su letargo al Barcelona, por lo que al 38' en una desconcentración de Joa Pereira llegó la anotación del empate por medio de la vía penal, en la que el zaguero valenciano cometió falta en el área grande. Lio Messi fue el encargado de ejecutarlo, y con un tiro fuerte al ángulo superior derecho del portero mandó al fondo, consiguiendo su gol 33 de la temporada.

El segundo periodo se jugó a buen ritmo, teniendo las mejores jugadas el cuadro catalán, la mejor de ellas llegó al minuto 54 por medio de Cesc Fábregas, quien no aprovechó un excelente pase filtrado de Messi que lo dejó solo frente al portero, pero su disparo se fue por un lado.

El equipo visitante siguió siendo mejor en esta parte complementaria y se volvió a perder el segundo en los botines del recién ingresado David Villa, quien ante el portero Guaita no pudo definir un balón en el área grande, dejando escapar la oportunidad más clara de su escuadra.

Valencia también llegó con peligro, pero la más clara se le presentó a Roberto Soldado en los minutos finales (89') y en la que el portero Víctor Valdés se erigió como el héroe de su escuadra, luego de parar en doble jugada a bocajarro ante su portería, pero con buenos lances evitó su caída, por lo que el encuentro quedó sentenciado.

Este marcador colocó al Barcelona con 59 unidades, mientras que Valencia llegó a 34, colocándose en el sexto lugar de la tabla general.
