NUEVA ORLEANS (AP) — Un apagón en el Super Bowl provocó que el máximo acontecimiento deportivo de Estados Unidos se interrumpiera durante más de media hora el domingo, pero el partido ofreció un vibrante desenlace que culminó con Joe Flacco y los Ravens de Baltimore como los campeones de la NFL al vencer 34-31 a los 49ers de San Francisco.

Flacco, quien fue consagrado como el Jugador Más Valioso del partido, lanzó tres pases de touchdown en la primera mitad para coronar una postemporada de 11 anotaciones sin ninguna intercepción.

Además, Jacoby Jones fijó un récord al anotar con una carrera de 108 yardas al devolver la patada de arranque del segundo tiempo que puso a Baltimore al frente por 22 puntos.

Pero lo insólito se produjo instantes después. El Superdome, el estadio bajo techo de Nueva Orleáns, se quedó sin luz.

Cuando el duelo se pudo reanudar, tras una demora de 34 minutos, Colin Kaepernick y los 49ers reaccionaron con 17 puntos consecutivos y se pusieron a tiro, 31-29.

Pero la defensa de Baltimore se plantó firme al frenar a San Francisco en una cuarta oportunidad y gol desde la yarda 5 cuando el paso de Kaepernick flotó demasiado lejos del alcance de Michael Crabtree en la zona de anotación. Quedaban dos minutos por jugar.

En la historia del partido por el campeonato de la NFL, el margen más amplio que un equipo pudo remontar para salir triunfante fue de 10 puntos.

Y por momentos dio la impresión que San Francisco lograría la gesta. En cambio, los 49ers sucumbieron por primera vez en seis participaciones en el Super Bowl.

Los Ravens (14-6), campeones de la Conferencia Americana y franquicia que se mudó de Cleveland a Baltimore hace 17 años, quedó ahora con foja de 2-0 en la cita.

También se consagraron en 2001, cuando su linebacker Ray Lewis fue galardonado como el Más Valioso. Lewis no incidió esta vez, pero fue el foco de atención al disputar el último partido de una carrera de 17 años tras haber anunciado de antemano sus planes de retiro.

Los 49ers vinieron de menos a más en la primera pulseada entre hermanos entrenadores en un Super Bowl: John Harbaugh de Baltimore es 15 meses mayor que Jim Harbaugh de San Francisco.

Con Baltimore al frente 21-6 en el descanso, Jones batió un récord al conseguir la devolución de una patada de inicio en un Super Bowl. La anotación abultó la diferencia a un 28-6, pero casi inmediatamente después la luz se fue en el estadio techado de Nueva Orleáns, haciéndose imposible la visibilidad.

Los árbitros no tuvieron otra remedio que interrumpir el duelo cuando apenas había transcurrido minuto y medio del tercer cuarto.

El episodio provocó una demora de 34 minutos hasta que el trámite se pudo reanudar. Algunos jugadores prefirieron sentarse, otro estiraron las piernas. Los espectadores hicieron la ola en las tribunas.

Esta fue la décima ocasión que Nueva Orleáns es anfitriona del partido de campeonato de la NFL y la primera desde que el huracán Katrina devastó la ciudad en agosto de 2005.

Al reanudarse el partido, San Francisco se acercó peligrosamente en el marcador al anotar un par de touchdowns en un lapso de dos minutos y medio.

Primero, Kaepernick lanzó un pase de touchdown de 31 yardas a Michael Crabtree para achicar la diferencia a 15 puntos. Los defensive backs Cary Williams y Bernard Pollard, de los Ravens, no pudieron hacer tacleadas en la jugada. Luego, a falta de cinco minutos en el período, Frank Gore acarreó el balón por el costado derecho para un touchdown de seis yardas que puso el marcador 28-20.

Acto seguido, el running back de los Ravens Ray Rice perdió el balón y los 49ers aprovecharon para ponerse 28-23 gracias a un gol de campo de 34 yardas de David Akers, luego que éste había fallado desde más lejos. Akers obtuvo una segunda oportunidad, luego que los Ravens fueron penalizados por embestir el pateador. Fue el tercer gol de campo de Akers en el partido tras anotar con patadas de 36 y 27 yardas en el primer tiempo.

En el cuarto período, el novato Justin Tucker pateó un gol de campo de 19 yardas que permitió a los Ravens despegarse 31-23. Kaepernick, con una carrera de 15 yardas por la banda izquierda —el touchdown de mayor distancia en acarreo por un quarterback en la historia del Super Bowl, puso las cosas 31-29. Pero el mariscal de campo no logró completar la conversión de dos puntos, con un pase incompleto a Randy Mss.

Un gol de campo de 38 yardas de Tucker aumentó la diferencia 34-29 con 4:19 por jugar en el tiempo regular. Baltimore optó por ceder un safety para agotar los segundos y establecer cifras definitivas.

El primer tiempo fue de completo dominio de Flacco, debutante en un Super Bowl. Flacco arrancó muy afilado: completó 13 de 20 pases para acumular 192 yardas y tres anotaciones. Lleva 11 pases de touchdown sin intercepciones esta postemporada.

Los 49ers, en cambio, sufrieron con su juego desprolijo. Soltaron el balón dos veces durante un lapso de cinco minutos durante el segundo cuarto. El novato running back LaMichael James soltó el ovoide, lo que derivó en touchdown de los Ravens. Además, el safety Ed Reed empató un récord de la NFL con su novena intercepción de postemporada al llevarse un disparo de Kaepernick.

En vez de sumar más puntos tras la intercepción de Reed, Baltimore tuvo que ceder el balón al simular un intento de gol de campo pero sin poder conseguir el primer down.

Pero no importó. San Francisco tuvo que volver a despejar y Flacco conectó con Jones para un pase de touchdown de 56 yardas a menos de 2 minutos por jugar en el primer tiempo.

En su primera ofensiva, Flacco lanzó un pase de 13 yardas que Anquan Boldin atrapó en la zona de anotación cuando apenas habían transcurrido algo más de 4 minutos. El otro touchdown fue con un pase de una yarda al tight end Dennis Pitta cuando promediaba el segundo cuarto, luego del error de James.
