LONDRES (AP) — Tras pasar por Madrid, Milán y Hollywood, ahora David Beckham se dirige al destino más glamuroso de todos.

El ex capitán de la selección de Inglaterra llegó a un acuerdo con el Paris Saint-Germain y será presentado oficialmente en el club francés más tarde el jueves, dijo a The Associated Press una persona al tanto de la situación, la cual habló a condición de guardar el anonimato porque aún no se anuncia oficialmente la firma del mismo. Beckham se someterá a un examen médico en París.

El PSG sólo confirmó que el jueves será presentado un nuevo jugador en conferencia de prensa.

El volante de 37 años estuvo cerca de pasar al equipo de propiedad catarí en enero pasado, pero rechazó un acuerdo por aproximadamente 12 millones de dólares al año para permanecer un poco más con el Galaxy de Los Angeles de la MLS estadounidense.

El mes pasado el futbolista puso fin a sus seis años en Estados Unidos tras ganar dos finales de la MLS, mudándose a Londres de nuevo con su esposa Victoria, ex integrante del grupo musical Spice Girls, y los cuatro hijos de ambos.

Ahora la familia de Beckham estará a solamente un recorrido corto por aire o tren de los Campos Elíseos.

En el PSG, Beckham esperará ganar un título de liga en un cuarto país, después de que ya tuvo un paso exitoso en Inglaterra con el Manchester United, en España con el Real Madrid y en Estados Unidos con el Galaxy.

Beckham busca una oportunidad más de cerrar su brillante carrera con broche de oro. París parece ser un lugar perfecto para un jugador que también se ha convertido en un ícono de la moda y el estilo, conocido tanto por ser bien parecido y por los patrocinios que recibe como por sus tiros libres con efecto.

Sin embargo, todavía está por verse si Beckham aún puede ser una fuerza que influya en el fútbol europeo a pesar de su edad.

"Aún siento que me queda algo como jugador", dijo recientemente. "Todavía siento que me queda un reto más como futbolista, incluso a los 37 años. Aún siento que puedo jugar a un alto nivel".

En el PSG Beckham volverá a reunirse con el entrenador Carlo Ancelotti y el director deportivo Leonardo, que estaban en el Milan cuando éste recibió al mediocampista en préstamo del Galaxy en 2009 y 2010.

"Muy contento de ver a Beckham ir al PSG y de nuevo bajo el señor Ancelotti!", escribió Umberto Gandini, dirigente del Milan, el jueves en Twitter. "Gran jugador y gran persona; se lo merece. Buena suerte!"

Beckham, que estaba disponible en una transferencia libre, estuvo sopesando el mes pasado aproximadamente una docena de ofertas de clubes de todo el mundo, incluidos equipos de Catar y China. Finalmente optó por una de las franquicias más destacadas en el fútbol mundial: durante los últimos 18 meses, los propietarios cataríes del PSG han gastado unos 350 millones de dólares en adquisiciones.

Pero al amplio poder económico del jeque Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, que invirtió por primera vez en el PSG en 2011, aún le falta dar fruto en cosecha de trofeos.

Con una escuadra de astros que incluye al delantero sueco Zlatan Ibrahimovic, el zaguero brasileño Thiago Silva y el argentino Javier Pastore, el equipo va delante del Lyon en el liderato de la tabla de posiciones francesa por diferencia de goles.
