El único republicano que quedaba en el gabinete de Barack Obama anunció este martes que no continuará en su cargo, por lo que el Secretario de Transporte Ray LaHood abandona su puesto en el segundo mandato del Presidente.

LaHood dijo a la agencia AP, que no obstante, permanecerá al frente del departamento hasta que un sucesor sea designado por Obama.

LaHood ayudó al gobierno de Obama a llevar adelante diversas medidas de seguridad y proyectos de carreteras en los últimos cuatro años. Su historial incluye medidas para reducir la distracción al volante, el fomento de proyectos de trenes de alta velocidad, así como mejoras en caminos y puentes.

LaHood dijo que no se postularará a algún cargo de elección popular en su estado, Illinois, y afirmó que considera que "uno debe irse mientras están aplaudiendo".

El otro republicano que estuvo durante el primer mandato del Presidente Barack Obama fue el Secretario de Defensa, Robert Gates, quien fue reemplazado posteriormente por el demócrata Leon Panetta.
