MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — El serbio Novak Djokovic lució de nuevo como una aplanadora en la cancha y se apoderó por tercera vez seguida del título del Abierto de Australia, al imponerse el domingo 6-7 (2), 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-2 al británico Andy Murray, quien vio roto sus sueños de ganar su segundo torneo del Grand Slam.

Djokovic, primero del escalafón mundial, es el primer hombre que se corona tres veces seguidas en Melbourne desde que este torneo adoptó la modalidad de abierto.

"Me encanta esta cancha", afirmó Djokovic. "Es decididamente mi Grand Slam favorito. Siento una sensación increíble de ganar este trofeo una vez más".

El serbio ha ganado cuatro de sus seis títulos importantes en Melbourne Park, donde ahora está invicto en 21 encuentros.

Nacidos en mayo de 1987 con una sola semana de diferencia y amigos desde los días en que participaban en el circuito juvenil del tenis, Djokovic y Murray mostraron que se conocen bien, en una revancha de la final del Abierto de Estados Unidos del año pasado, conquistada por el escocés. No hubo quiebres de servicio sino hasta el octavo game del tercer set, cuando Djokovic lo logró y se encaminó al triunfo.

En el siguiente game, con el servicio, el serbio Djokovic dejó en cero a su rival y tomó una ventaja de dos sets a uno.

El segundo rompimiento del encuentro también fue obra del serbio, para colocarse arriba por 2-1 en el cuarto set. Un quiebre más puso la situación en 4-1, cuando Murray incurrió en una falta doble en break point.

Esta vez, Djokovic no se desgarró la camiseta como lo hizo el año pasado, después de su épica victoria sobre el español Rafael Nadal en cinco horas y 53 minutos. Simplemente bailó un poco, miró al cielo y aplaudió al público, tras un esfuerzo de 3:40 horas.

Fue el sexto título de Djokovic en torneos del Grand Slam y el cuarto que consigue en el Melbourne Park, donde marcha invicto en 21 partidos.

El triunfo de Murray sobre Djokovic en la última final del US Open puso fin a una sequía de 76 años para los tenistas británicos en majors. Murray, de 25 años, ha perdido tres finales del Abierto de Australia en los últimos cuatro años.

La victoria de Djokovic contradijo las estadísticas en las finales recientes aquí. En cuatro de los últimos cinco años, el jugador que ganó su semifinal en segundo término ha ganado el torneo. Pero esta vez, Djokovic jugó su semifinal el jueves, un triunfo fácil de tres sets y 89 minutos contra el cuarto preclasificado, el español David Ferrer. En cambio Murray necesitó todas sus energías para derrotar el viernes por la noche a Roger Federer, ganador de 17 torneos grandes.

El triunfo consolida la posición de Djokovic como número uno en el escalafón del mundo. Federer y Murray quedarán respectivamente segundo y tercero cuando se den a conocer el lunes los ránkings de la ATP.

Murray, que solicitó la asistencia de un entrenador para que volviera a vendarle el pie derecho con ampollas al final del segundo set, se vio visiblemente contrariado por el ruido del público durante el tercer set. Dos veces interrumpió su saque hasta que amainó el ruido. Después de perder el tercer set, sequejó del ruido al juez John Blom.

Los partidarios de Murray fueron bien visibles: algunos usaron pelucas del tipo de "Braveheart", banderas escocesas pintadas en el rostro y gorras con el cuadriculado de los clanes escoceses. También se vieron algunas camisas, gorras y banderas serbias. El astro retirado de la NBA Vlade Divac ocupaba un lugar en el palco de Djokovic.

Victoria Azarenka, que ganó el sábado la final de mujeres a Li Na, estaba entre el público con su novio, el rapero Redfoo. El actor Kevin Spacey, que saludó en los vestuarios a los dos tenistas antes del partido, asistió por tercera noche consecutiva.

En la final de dobles mixtos jugada poco antes el domingo, los australianos Jarmila Gajdosova y Matthew Ebden vencieron a los checos Lucie Hradecka y Frantisek Cermak 6-3, 7-5.
