MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — El británico Andy Murray finalmente venció a Roger Federer en un torneo de Grand Slam.

El campeón del Abierto de Estados Unidos superó el viernes 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-2 a Federer en las semifinales del Abierto de Australia, y luego dijo que fue un tremendo envión anímico para cuando enfrente al favorito Novak Djokovic en busca de su segundo título de un Grand Slam.

Djokovic, el campeón defensor y quien busca su tercera corona al hilo en Melbourne, despachó el jueves en apenas 90 minutos al español David Ferrer, por lo que tendrá un día adicional de descanso antes de la final del domingo.

Apúntele una ventaja al serbio.

Hubo algo de polémica en el 12do game del cuarto set, cuando Federer pareció mirar y decirle algo a Murray mientras el escocés se detuvo momentáneamente detrás de la línea de fondo durante un rally.

Murray no le hizo caso después de ganar el punto, pero perdió su saque en ese game y perdió el desempate siguiente. Después se recuperó en la quinta manga.

"O sea, no fue gran cosa", comentó Federer sobre el incidente. "Sólo nos miramos en una ocasión. Creo que está bien. Simplemente nos estábamos midiendo un poco. No fue gran cosa para mí, y espero que no lo haya sido para él".

Aunque Murray llegó al duelo con una foja de 10-9 en sus enfrentamientos contra Federer, no lo había vencido en tres duelos en majors —las finales del Abierto de Estados Unidos en 2008, el Abierto de Australia en 2010 y Wimbledon en 2012.

"Siempre se me complica contra él. Él juega su mejor tenis en los Grand Slam, y así ha sido durante toda su carrera", dijo Murray respecto del suizo. "Cuando estaba contra la pared, en 6-5, y yo tenía el saque, hizo algunos disparos increíbles. Yo simplemente tuve que seguir peleando".

Federer jugó mejor que Murray en algunos tramos del encuentro, pero el escocés de 25 años pareció estar más fresco que su oponente de 31 años en el quinto set. Murray le quebró el saque para llevarse el triunfo.

"Es importante. Nunca le había ganado a Roger en un Slam. Sin duda me dará confianza", reconoció Murray. "Ayuda saber que puedes ganarle a esos jugadores en los partidos importantes".

Federer indicó que tuvo que remontar toda la noche.

"Definitivamente fue una persecución", dijo el suizo. "Creo que tuve mis pequeñas oportunidades. Obviamente en un partido a cinco sets vas a lamentar ciertas cosas. Pero, en general, creo que Andy fue un poco mejor que yo esta noche".

Ante 15.000 espectadores que llenaron la Arena Rod Laver, incluida la propia leyenda del tenis cuyo nombre se puso al estadio, la semifinal resultó espectacular.

Más temprano, las italianas Sara Errani y Roberta Vinci, primeras cabezas de serie en los dobles, conquistaron el primer título repartido en Melbourne en 2013, al derrotar a las australianas Ashleigh Barty y Casey Dellacqua en la final, por 6-2, 6-2.

Bharty, de 16 años, buscaba ser la campeona más joven de un torneo del Grand Slam desde que Martina Hingis ganó en individuales en Australia, en 1997.

El sábado, la campeona defensora Victoria Azarenka, de Bielorrusia, enfrenta a la china Li Na, sexta en la preclasificación, por el título de individuales en mujeres. Li perdió la final del Abierto de Australia ante la belga Kim Clijsters en 2011, dos meses antes de ganar su primero y único título del Grand Slam, el Abierto de Francia.

"La última vez fue más emocionante, (estaba más) nerviosa porque era mi primera vez en una final", expresó Li el viernes. "Pero creo que esta vez (estoy) más tranquila".

Azarenka tiene ventaja de 5-4 en sus duelos con Li, incluyendo triunfos en sus cuatro últimos partidos.

"Estoy muy decidida a defender mi título", dijo Azarenka, quien tiene que vencer a la china para conservar el primer puesto del ranking mundial. "Estoy en una posición para hacerlo".

En la otra final del sábado, los hermanos estadounidenses Bob y Mike Bryan jugarán la final de dobles contra los holandeses Robin Haase e Igor Sijsling.
