Luego del esperado debut del zaguero internacional Rafael Márquez en la Copa Libertadores, éste no fue del todo bueno, pues salió lesionado en los primeros minutos del partido, después del empate que su equipo León tuvo como local ante la escuadra chilena de Deportes Iquique en el juego de ida.
El central mexicano solamente pudo estar en el terreno de juego 10 minutos, en donde tuvo una contractura en el muslo izquierdo, por lo que el timonel uruguayo Gustavo Matosas no dudó en sustituirlo, en su lugar ingresó el ex jugador de Chivas Jonny Magallón.
Aunado a perder a su jugador estrella al inicio del partido, al minuto 3 el conjunto de León ya perdía el cotejo, luego del golazo del delantero andino Rodrigo Díaz, quien dentro del área grande del lado izquierdo sacó escopetazo de derecha para colocar la pelota al ángulo superior derecho del segundo poste del portero Christian Martínez.
En esta primera mitad, el equipo Esmeralda se fue con todo en busca del gol de la igualada, pero no tuvo idea para poder abrir el candado que impuso el cuadro andino, que se defendió con todo en su zona baja.
Para la segunda parte, de nueva cuenta la escuadra visitante estuvo a punto de conseguir un gol tempranero, después del fuerte escopetazo fuera del área del mismo autor del gol Rodrigo Díaz, pero en esta ocasión el poste fue cómplice del portero, luego de ver cómo el trallazo pegó en la parte superior.
León pudo responder con otro balonazo al poste de Juan Rojas, pero no pasó a mayores; sin embargo, por fin pudo alcanzar el empate hasta la parte final del encuentro (87), luego de una gran jugada del ingresado Nelson Maz, quien con cabezazo colocado dejó la pelota en el fondo para sentenciar el encuentro.
