WOKING, Inglaterra (AP) — Aunque todavía no gana una sola carrera en la Fórmula Uno, el piloto mexicano Sergio Pérez cree que puede luchar por el campeonato mundial en 2013 en su primera temporada con la escudería McLaren.

Pérez fue presentado el miércoles a los empleados de la escudería en su sede en Inglaterra, y demostró enorme confianza sobre sus posibilidades en el campeonato de este año.

"Mi meta no es simplemente sumar puntos o podios", dijo el oriundo de Guadalajara, de 23 años, y quien ha manejado en 37 carreras en la Fórmula Uno con la escudería Sauber. "Quiero ganar, ganar el campeonato. Cuando vienes a McLaren, tienes la oportunidad de hacer eso".

"Checo" Pérez manejó dos temporadas con Sauber antes de irse a McLaren para reemplazar a Lewis Hamilton, quien ahora manejará por Mercedes. Pérez logró tres podios en 2012, cuando se metió a los 10 primeros puestos de la clasificación con 66 puntos.

Pérez busca ser el primer mexicano que gana un Gran Premio de Fórmula Uno desde Pedro Rodríguez en 1970.

El piloto recibió una ovación cuando fue presentado al personal de McLaren.

"Todavía no me lo creo, que voy a manejar por el mejor equipo del mundo, porque ustedes son el mejor equipo. Quizás necesite algo de tiempo", señaló. "Estoy realmente motivado, ya quiero empezar y esta es una gran oportunidad para demostrar lo que puedo hacer en un equipo de primer nivel".

La temporada comienza el 17 de marzo en Australia.
