Cuando Gabrielle Douglas soñaba con ser una campeona olímpica, se imaginaba compartiendo con familiares y amigos en una cena de celebración. Quizás haría una que otra presentación pública.

"Jamás pensé que sería así de loco", comentó Douglas, riéndose. "Me encanta. Pero me di cuenta que tendría que cambiar mi perspectiva".

La adolescente se convirtió en una estrella mundial desde que conquistó el título de la competencia individual en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres, la primera estadounidense negra que gana el premio mayor de la gimnasia. Y ahora tiene otra distinción: Douglas fue elegida como la atleta del año de The Associated Press en Estados Unidos, al superar a la nadadora Missy Franklin en una votación de medios de ese país cuyos resultados fueron anunciados el viernes.

"No me había dado cuenta sobre el impacto que tuve", relató Douglas, quien cumple 17 años el 31 de diciembre. "Mi mamá y todos me dijeron, 'no sabrás el impacto real hasta que tengas 30 ó 40 años'. Pero ya empiezo a darme cuenta".

En un año con varias actuaciones descollantes de mujeres, la pequeña gimnasta fue la más brillante para los votantes en Estados Unidos. Douglas recibió 48 de 157 votos, siete más que Franklin. Serena Williams, quien ganó Wimbledon, el Abierto de Estados Unidos y dos oros olímpicos, quedó tercera con 24.

El nadador Michael Phelps recibió el jueves el premio al atleta hombre más destacado de 2012, según los medios de Estados Unidos.
