BUENOS AIRES (AP) — Lionel Messi sufrió una derrota inesperada a manos del boxeador Sergio "Maravilla" Martínez, quien le ganó puja por el premio al mejor deportista argentino del 2012.

Pesó más la victoria de Martínez cuando le quitó el cinturón de los medianos de la CMB al mexicano Julio César Chávez, el 15 de setiembre en Las Vegas, que los 90 goles de Messi en 2012 con el Barcelona y la selección argentina.

"Maravilla" Martínez se quedó en la noche del martes con el Olimpia de Oro, la máxima distinción que otorga a los atletas el Círculo de Periodistas Deportivos.

Martínez superó por tres votos a Sebastián Crismanich, medalla de oro en taekwondo en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres 2012.

Messi, quien figuró tercero entre los candidatos en la votación final, se llevó el consuelo de ser elegido como el mejor futbolista argentino que actúa en el exterior, lo que significó la estatuilla de plata.

"Es un orgullo haber ganado este premio teniendo a deportistas como Sebastián Crismanich y Leo Messi", dijo Martínez, quien defenderá su título ante el inglés Martín Murray, el 27 de abril en el estadio de Vélez Sarsfield, de la capital argentina.
