YOKOHAMA, Japón (AP) — Con un gol del Peruano Paolo Guerrero a los 69 minutos, Corinthians derrotó el domingo a Chelsea por 1-0 para ganar la final de la Copa Mundial de Clubes.

Después que el equipo brasileño resistió durante más de una hora la presión insistente del conjunto inglés, Paulinho se filtró en el área rival, donde cedió a Danilo, cuyo remate se desvió en un defensor y Guerrero aprovechó el rebote de cabeza para derrotar al arquero Petr Cech.

El campeón de la Copa Libertadores se suma a Barcelona como los únicos equipos en ganar dos veces el torneo. El primero lo ganó en el año 2000.

Para Chelsea la derrota no hizo sino sumar una nueva decepción; este mes fue el primer campeón defensor que resulta eliminado en la etapa de grupos de la Liga de Campeones, el torneo más importante a nivel de clubes europeos.

Chelsea quedó con un hombre menos cuando Gary Cahill recibió tarjeta roja por infracción violenta contra Emerson en el último minuto de juego. En el descuento, Fernando Torres cabeceó y la pelota se introdujo en la red, pero la jugada fue invalidada por posición adelantada.

El arquero brasileño Cassio se lució en la primera etapa impidiendo la caída de su meta.

A los 11 minutos, el equipo inglés estuvo a punto de abrir el marcador, pero Cassio voló para desviar un remate envenenado de Cahill.

A los 39, el guardameta brasileño volvió a lucirse al desviar con una mano un remate cruzado del delantero Victor Moses.

Corinthians tuvo su mejor oportunidad de la primera etapa a los 29 minutos, cuando Emerson disparó un balón que pasó apenas alto.

Frank Lampard, en su tercer partido de regreso a las canchas tras seis semanas de inactividad por lesión, entró como titular en el equipo europeo.

Fue el primer torneo en presentar tecnología de avanzada para detectar si la pelota traspone la meta. El sistema GoalRef, con base a un campo magnético, se empleó en el estadio de Yokohama. Asimismo en el estadio Toyota, sede de otro encuentro, se instaló el sistema Hawk-Eye con cámara. Ninguno de los dos hizo falta.

Poco antes de la final, el club mexicano Monterrey obtuvo el tercer puesto al derrotar al Al-Ahly de Egipto 2-0.
