Con un final dramático en el estadio de Etihad, el conjunto de Manchester United consiguió un gol de último minuto y logró imponerse 3-2 a la escuadra del City en el 'derby' de la ciudad, con lo que de este modo el equipo del entrenador Alex Ferguson amplió su ventaja en la Premier League a seis unidades en el liderato general.

El partido fue espectacular de principio a fin, en donde ambos conjuntos se adueñaron de un tiempo cada uno; sin embargo, en una jugada fortuita en tiempo de compensación, el cuadro de Roberto Mancini se llevó el descalabro, a pesar del gran dominio que tuvo se escuadra en la segunda parte.

Desde que empezó a rodar el balón, el cuadro de City se adueñó de él; sin embargo, solo pudo llegar una sola vez en los botines de Balotelli; sin embargo, el ManU en su primera llegada consiguió abrir el marcador (15'), luego de un gran contragolpe terminado de Wayne Rooney.

Con el gol, Manchester United desapareció a su rival de la cancha y se adueñó del partido, por lo que al 29' logró ampliar su ventaja con el segundo gol del astro inglés, quien recibió un gran pase de Rafael por el lado derecho, en donde Rooney solamente tuvo que empujar el centro raso del jugador brasileño.

Para el segundo tiempo, el cuadro de Ferguson le cedió la iniciativa al local y, pesar de que el silbante le quitó un gol legítimo a Ashley Young al 59' que pudo haber sido el 3-0, el Manchester City logró acortar las distancias al siguiente minuto, luego de una melé dentro del área de los rojos, en donde De Gea había salvado su meta en dos ocasiones, pero al tercer disparo fue el vencido, siendo Yaya Touré el ejetor.

La escuadra ciudadana se hizo ama y señora del partido ante la poca respuesta del rival, por lo que al 85' en un tiro de esquina nació el gol de Pablo Zabaleta, quien logró agarrar un rebote de pierna derecha para colocar el balón en las redes, a pesar de que éste pasó por varias piernas enemigas.

Y cuando se pensaba que el partido se iría con el empate, luego del gran segundo tiempo del equipo del City, al minuto 90, en pelota parada fuera del área grande, Robin Van Persie consiguió el gol del triunfo con un zurdazo, no obstante de que Nasri fue cómplice al desviar el balón que no pudo ser detenido por Hart.
