Gerard Butler se hizo famoso en todo el mundo con la genial cinta "300" (y su patadita inolvidable de "This is Spartaaaaa!"). El actor, nacido en Escocia hace 43 años, también ha compartido la pantalla con grandes estrellas como Jennifer Aniston ("The Bounty Hunter"), Hilary Swank ("P.S. I Love You"), Jodie Foster ("Nim's Island") y Katherine Heigl ("The Ugly Truth"), además de ganarse en el camino fama de ser un mujeriego empedernido.

Ahora, estrena la cinta "Playing for Keeps (Jugando por amor)", en donde interpreta a una estrella del fútbol europeo ya venido a menos, quien debe aceptar un trabajo como entrenador de un equipo de chicos en Estados Unidos, en donde pronto se convierte la sensación de todas las soccer moms, incluyendo a Catherine Zeta-Jones, Uma Thurman y Judy Greer. Sin embargo, él deberá reencontrarse con su ex esposa (Jessica Biel) y su hijo, quien lo adora sobre todas las cosas. Pronto, verá que no es una labor nada fácil.

Hablamos con el carismático actor por el estreno de la cinta en cines, este viernes 7 de diciembre, y lo primero que nos contó es que, de Latinoamérica, solamente ha visitado Brasil y dos ciudades de México. "Sólo fui a Tijuana algunas veces cuando era joven y estudiante, y a Cabo un par de ocasiones para vacaciones, pero no puedo creer que no haya visitado la Ciudad de México, ya que he tenido cuatro oportunidades en las que se supone que tenía que ir para allá de promoción, pero jamás se concretó nada. Y el otro día estaba viendo una película donde los personajes volaban para allá y me decía: '¿Cómo es posible que nunca hayas ido a este lugar? ¡Hazlo!"

Deberías, particularmente porque en todo Latinoamérica y en España amamos el soccer.
¡Exacto! Hice una película de soccer hace muchos años sobre Estados Unidos jugando un partido de soccer contra Inglaterra en los '50 ["The Game of Their Lives", 2005] y era en Brasil, así que tuvimos que jugar soccer ahí frente a cinco mil fans auténticos y ésa ha sido una de las cosas más difíciles que he tenido que filmar en mi carrera, porque, aunque en la cinta debían ser fanáticos de verdad de nuestros equipos, la verdad es que se estaban burlando de nosotros y cómo jugábamos, porque no puedes superar las expectativas de los brasileños, que son tan, tan buenos. Fue una experiencia tan interesante y me encanta recordarla. Así que para esta película intenté trabajar lo más posible, sobre todo en mis habilidades para jugar, porque uno siempre puede darse cuenta si alguien sabe o no jugar soccer; especialmente un latino, ellos lo adivinan en dos segundos y pueden afirmar: "Este tipo es un idiota, ni sabe mover el balón." O claro, lo contrario (risas).

¿Cuánto sabías de soccer y de equipos latinoamericanos antes de hacer estas cintas?
Para serte honesto, fui perdiendo el hábito en general. Solía ver muchos juegos antes cuando crecí en Escocia y hasta iba religiosamente a ver partidos, pero ahora que vivo en Los Angeles, te puedo decir que la ciudad me mató el gusto de verlo, porque jamás están pasándolo en televisión y tienes que andar cazando a ver en qué horarios están.

Uno de los mayores atractivos de "Playing for Keeps" son las chicas: Catherine, Uma, Jessica...
Antes que nada, fue un honor contar con tal talentoso elenco, y por supuesto, bellísimas, todas. Pero además son muy divertidas, conmovedoras y resultaron ser la mejor parte de la película para mí, esas relaciones que tuve con ellas. Aprendí tanto de cada una de ellas, porque todas tienen una carrera impresionante y son actrices increíbles. Normalmente, podría decirte: "Oh, pues ya hice una película con Hilary Swank, otra con Jennifer Aniston y luego con Katie Heigl, pero aquí puedo presumir que hice algo con tres de las actrices más talentosas en este momento, así que creo que encontré oro, sobre todo siendo el productor también de la película.

Me gustó el mensaje de la cinta, que es "la historia de un hombre que tiene una última oportunidad de descubrir quién quiere ser en la vida".
Y amo esa frase, porque creo que al inicio de la historia, conoces a un hombre que ha disfrutado de una vida llena de acción, emoción y ha sido el centro de atención, pero pronto te das cuenta que es una mentira, porque ha perdido la confianza y se siente como un perdedor. Así que debe encontrar un nuevo significado y descubrir qué es lo que en verdad importa en la vida. Debe madurar y ser un padre y esposo, en un auténtico hogar, y alguien en quien su familia puede confiar. Pero para eso tiene que pasar todo este viaje conmovedor de aprendizaje, donde debe ya no decepcionar a su ex esposa y a su hijo, más que nada, quien ha crecido admirándolo. Y siento que eso es algo con lo que muchas personas pueden identificarse.

Y hablando de viajes, has tenido un año complicado, como tu accidente de surf.
Sí, justo eso me pasó a finales del año pasado, así que entré a 2012 sintiéndome bastante afortunado de estar vivo, antes que nada (risas), y después, porque te brinda una perspectiva fresca sobre la vida. Te das cuenta que no estarás aquí por siempre. Además, salieron un par de películas de las que me siento muy orgulloso, como ésa, "Chasing Mavericks". Creo que cada vez que llegas a un año nuevo y estás vivo, a pesar de cualquier problema que te topes, ¡debes llamarlo un gran año!
