LOS ANGELES (AP) — La Academia de las Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas celebrará la carrera vanguardista del cineasta español Pedro Almodóvar con una retrospectiva la próxima semana en el Curzon Soho Cinema en Londres.

La gala del 13 de diciembre será presentada por el especialista en cultura popular Sir Christopher Frayling e incluirá una charla con Almodóvar y varios de sus amigos, colegas y familiares, como su hermano y productor de sus películas, Agustín Almodóvar; el compositor español Alberto Iglesias, el diseñador francés de alta costura Jean-Paul Gaultier y los directores ingleses Stephen Frears, Peter Morgan y Sally Potter.

A través de extractos de muchas de las películas de Almodóvar se explorará la profundidad de sus expresiones artísticas, su apasionado compromiso con la sensibilidad humana y una cosmovisión encarnada por sus poderosas protagonistas, anunció la Academia el martes en un comunicado.

Almodóvar fue una de las figuras principales en la Movida Madrileña, el movimiento de cultura pop de Madrid de finales de la década de 1970 y comienzos de los 80. Realizó su primer largometraje "Pepi, Luci, Bom" en 1980, pero la cinta que lo lanzó al estrellato fue "Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios" en 1988, nominada a un Oscar a la mejor película extranjera y cuyo reconocimiento internacional garantizó la distribución mundial de sus siguientes producciones.

En 1999 su cinta "Todo sobre mi madre" ganó el Oscar a la mejor película de lengua extranjera y en el 2002 "Hable con ella" le valió nominaciones a mejor director y mejor guion original, y Almodóvar se llevó la codiciada estatuilla en esta última categoría. Además ha recibido numerosos galardones por películas tan diversas como "Carne trémula" (1997), "La mala educación" (2004), "Volver" (2006) y "La piel que habito" (2011).

El homenaje presentado por la academia es una gala privada.
