Con unas tarjetas que no reflejaron lo sucedido en el ring del Madison Square Garden, Austin Trout rompió una racha de siete victorias de Miguel Angel Cotto en Nueva York y de paso retuvo la corona mundial Superwelter del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo.

Al termino de los doce episodios los jueces vieron ganar por decisión unánime (117-111, 117-111 y 119-109) a un Austin Trout que tuvo muchos problemas para adaptarse al estilo preciso del boricua durante los primeros seis episodios.

Cotto inició de manera fuerte, buscando la pelea, proponiendo. Con golpes exactos y a velocidad, con buen manejo de ring, logró imponer su experiencia sobre el campeón mundial que logró concretar la cuarta defensa de la corona gracias a que el cansancio hizo mella en el isleño de 32 años.

Trout vio la oportunidad de cambiar las puntuaciones a raíz de que terminaba el quinto episodio. Un Cotto más lento y pasivo le dio la oportunidad de conectar potentes volados de izquierda y golpes que poco a poco lo fueron dejando huellas en el rostro.
Tras escuchar el resultado de la contienda, Cotto demostró su enojo abandonando el ring de inmediato y sentenció que volvería a pelear.

Mientras que Trout reveló que el daría la revancha a Cotto en cuanto guste o en su defecto enfrentaría al campeón mexicano Saúl Álvarez, posible rival que se mencionaba para Cotto si este ganaba la noche del sábado.

Velez gana título Plata

La noche del sábado en la pelea de apoyo de Cotto vs. Tout, el boricua Jayson Velez conquistó la corona Plata Pluma avalada por el Consejo Mundial de Boxeo al vencer por nocaut técnico en el tercer round al mexicano Salvador Sánchez 2.

Velez logró lucir rápido y con grandes combinaciones sobre un mexicano sin las tablas ni para defenderse y quien visitó la lona en dos ocasiones.

Con esta victoria Velez - de 24 años de edad - se hizo de la oportunidad de retar al campeón mexicano Daniel Ponce de León, actual monarca absoluto de la división.
