Después de cinco temporadas y media David Beckham jugará este sábado su último partido en el fútbol de Estados Unidos. Luego de un inicio titubeante, el inglés cumplió con las expectativas que se tenían de él tras su millonaria contratación, a decir del comisionado de la Major League Soccer, Don Garber.

"No hay un aficionado en el mundo que no conozca al Galaxy, a la MLS, y a David Beckham. Él ha desempeñado un papel significativo para que ello ocurra. Fue un embajador increíble de la liga y del Galaxy", dijo a la prensa en conferencia telefónica el mandamás del organismo.

Beckham llegó en 2007 a la MLS procedente del Real Madrid en un contrato exorbitante de 32.5 millones de dólares por cinco años. Evidentemente la apuesta de la liga era la difusión mundial que este golpe mediático daría.

"Necesitábamos a Beckham para que impulsara nuestra credibilidad, para que ayudara a que creciera nuestra popularidad y mostrara al mundo en realidad que Estados Unidos tenía una liga de primera nivel", agregó Garber.

"Nadie puede dudar que Beckham cumplió con las expectativas y de sobra", concluyó.

El inglés manifestó a su llegada la intención de ganar campeonatos con el equipo y de aportar en lo deportivo más allá del imán de taquilla, meta que logró el año pasado con la consecución de la Copa junto al equipo angelino comandado por Bruce Arena. Además de ese título, Beckham habrá jugado después del sábado tres finales.

"Hay algunas ofertas interesantes en la mesa pero en este momento mi mente está en la final que vamos a jugar contra Houston Dynamo, no sé a donde vaya después", dijo el 'Spice Boy' la semana pasada cuando anunció su salida de la liga.

El notorio salto de popularidad que logró la MLS tras la llegada de Beckham se reflejó en el incremento en la asistencia por partido que en 2012 llegó al récord de 18,807 promedio. Se expandieron franquicias dentro y fuera de la Unión Americana y se construyeron un par de inmuebles dedicados únicamente a la práctica del balompié.

Thierry Henry, Rafael Márquez, Robbie Keane y Tim Cahill, fueron algunas de las figuras de cartel internacional que motivados por el éxito de Beckham, accedieron a fichar por algún equipo estadounidense.
