El conjunto del Manchester City al final del partido dominó, pero su futbol no le alcanzó para derrotar a la escuadra del Real Madrid, con la que solamente pudo empatar a un gol en el estadio Etihad, por lo que de esta manera quedó eliminado de cualquier posibilidad de seguir avanzando en la Champions League.

El resultado hizo que el cuadro merengue amarrara su calificación en segundo lugar, luego de llegar a ocho puntos en el grupo D, quedando por debajo del cuadro alemán de Borussia Dortmund, con 11 -que en esta jornada venció 4-1 al Ajax-; en tercero se ubicó el cuadro holandés con cuatro y en el fondo en campeón de la Premier League con tres.

EL JUEGO
El encuentro comenzó a tambor batiente por parte del conjunto visitante, pues rápidamente dejó ver su superioridad, por lo que no tardó mucho en reflejarlo en el marcdor con el gol de Karim Benzema al minuto 9, luego de que Di María mandó centro del sendero derecho para la llegada del francés, quen sin marca de pierna derecha mandó al fondo.

Con el gol a favor, la escuadra se adueñó por completo del cotejo, por lo que empezó a llegar con más facilidad al marco rival, siendo Ronaldo y Khedira los autores de un par de jugadas que pudieron haber terminado en gol (13' y 14'), pero en las dos el jugador alemán las desperdició increíblemente.

Pero un minuto después, Cristiano Ronaldo estuvo cerca de aumentar la ventaja de su equipo, pues en un pase a profundidad de Alonso entró solo y, ante la salida de Hart, bombeó el esférico y, cuando éste se iba al fondo, la zaga local salvó en la última línea; todavía el despeje le cayó al portugués, pero ya no hizo nada y desperdició una clara.

Manchester tuvo una insinuación de peligro con un disparo de Agüero fuera del área grande, pero al 23' el mediocampista del Real Madrid Sami Khedira de nueva cuenta se perdió otra, luego de que una gran jugada individual entró solo ante el portero, pero el balón se lo estrelló a Hart.

El cuadro del director técnico Roberto Mancini poco a poco empezó a neutralizar el ataque merengue, por lo que el partido se comenzó a centrar en el medio campo, sin que a ninguno de los dos equipos se les presentara una clara.

En los minutos finales, el conjunto de José Mourinho terminó mejor, pero no con la presencia con la que empezaron las acciones de los primeros 45 minutos.

El segundo tiempo fue mucho mejor para el cuadro de los Citizens, pues salió con mejor ritmo, teniendo más profundidad en las bandas para poder hacer daño, por lo que al 49' Sergio Agüero dejó escapar la primera al adelantarse el balón dentro del área grande.

Manchester City siguió siendo mejor y ahora fue David Silva el que pudo llegar con peligro al 54', luego de que le cayera un rebote dentro del área grande y de zurda alcanzó a mandar su disparo al marco de Casillas, quien se quedó sin problemas con la esférica.

Por fin Real Madrid logró tener su primera llegada de esta segunda parte al 57, después de un gran contragolpe llevado a cabo por Cristiano Ronaldo, quien entró solo por la banda izquierda y centró al arribo de Khedira, que estrelló su cabezazo en un rival cuando tenía todo para mandar al fondo.

El cuadro local se perdió la más clara de su equipo al 64', en donde el argentino Agüero recibió centro por la banda izquierda y remató de pierna derecha, pero en el fondo con grandes reflejos Íker Casillas sacó la pelota de su línea final.

Pero al 72', en una polémica jugada, el silbante marcó un penal a favor del Manchester, en una falta de Arbeloa sobre Agüero, en donde incluso el jugador merengue recibió su segunda tarjeta amarilla. El mismo delantero argentino no tuvo problemas para conseguir el gol de la igualada.

En la parte final del encuentro y, con el hombre más en la cancha, el conjunto de Mancini terminó encima del rival, pero la escuadra madridista se fajó bien en su zona defensiva y evitó el gol de la voltereta, por lo que el marcador quedó sentenciado con el empate.
