La selección de Estados Unidos comenzó su preparación rumbo al hexagonal final de la Concacaf, en esta ocasión lo hizo en el Kubam Stadium de la ciudad de Rusia, lugar en donde logró empatar en tiempo de compensación a dos anotaciones ante el combinado anfitrión en partido amistoso.
El encuentro en la primera parte no tuvo muchas llegadas de peligro, pero el conjunto ruso aprovechó los primeros 10 minutos para poner en serios problemas al portero Tim Howard, que al 9' vio perforada su cabaña con el primer gol del encuentro por medio de Fedor Smolov.
El conjunto de las barras y las estrellas no bajó los brazos y , apesar de que llegó muy poco en los primeros 45 minutos , tuvo presencia en el área enemiga con arribos de Jozi Aldidore y Hérculez Gomez.
El segundo tiempo fue más emocionante a pesar de todos los cambios que se realizaron en donde ambos conjuntos se abrieron y se tuvieron mejores jugadas de peligro sobre los marcos; sin embargo, fue hasta el minuto 76 que el conjunto del timonel alemán Jurgen Klinsmann logró empatAr el juego con el gol de Michael Bradley.
El partido fue un ir y venir en ambas porterías, pero al 84' Clarence Goodson le cometió falta a Artem Dzyuba dentro del área para que el silbante no dudara en marcar el tiro penal, el cual no tuvo problemas para mandarlo a las redes Roman Shirokov.
Y cuando se pensaba que el cuadro ruso se iría con la victoria, el ingresado Mikkel Diskerud, quien apenas tenía seis minutos en la cancha, remató con la derecha en tiempo de compensación (90+3) para empatar el juego, por lo que de este modo quedó sentenciado el marcador.
