LOS ANGELES, California, EE.UU. (AP) — Los Lakers de Los Angeles contrataron el domingo por la noche a Mike D'Antoni, el ex entrenador de los Suns y de los Knicks que reemplazará a Mike Brown.

Los Lakers y el agente de D'Antoni, Warren LeGarie, confirmaron el acuerdo dos días después de que Los Angeles despidió a Brown tras sólo cinco partidos de la nueva temporada.

D'Antoni llegó a un acuerdo por tres años con una opción del equipo para una cuarta campaña. Obtuvo el puesto de timonel de los 16 veces campeones de la NBA sólo después de que se interrumpieron las negociaciones del club con Phil Jackson, ex entrenador de los Lakers.

Jackson, 11 veces campeón de la liga, se reunió el sábado con Jerry y Jim Buss, propietarios de la escuadra de Los Angeles, y con el gerente general Mitch Kupchak con el fin de analizar su posible regreso para un tercer período al timón del equipo.

Luego los directivos de los Lakers recurrieron a D'Antoni, que entrenó a Steve Nash, base de Los Angeles, durante cinco temporadas en Phoenix. Nash ganó dos premios al Jugador Más Valioso mientras implementaba la ágil ofensiva de D'Antoni durante las últimas cuatro temporadas del entrenador con el equipo, en las que ganaron al menos 54 partidos cada campaña y llegaron a dos finales de la Conferencia Oeste.

Después D'Antoni entrenó a Nueva York durante las cuatro temporadas pasadas. Renunció en marzo pasado tras un desempeño en gran medida infructuoso en el que el equipo sólo llegó una vez a los playoffs y no obtuvo victorias en postemporada.

D'Antoni también estuvo al frente de los Nuggets de Denver en la campaña 1998-99, acortada por problemas laborales.
