La selección de Argentina se paró con mucha personalidad en el estadio Nacional de Santiago y logró llevarse otra victoria más en la eliminatoria sudamericana -que lo mantiene a la cabeza de la misma-, luego de derrotar 2-1 al combinado de Chile, que con este resultado cayó hasta la sexta posición, fuera de los lugares que dan un boleto para Brasil 2014.

El partido fue bastante entretenido, pues desde el inicio ambos conjuntos no se dieron tregua y se fueron con todo en busca de un gol tempranero; sin embargo, la diferencia fue la contundencia del cuadro argentino, que por medio de sus artilleros internacionales lograron inclinar la balanza a su favor.

Chile desde los primeros minutos generó peligro, pero sus jugadores no tuvieron la capacidad para poder abrir el marcador, siendo sus mejores hombres Marcelo Díaz y Sebastian Pinto; mientras que por la albiceleste Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuaín, Sergio Agüero y Di María dejaron ver su olfato goleador sobre la meta de Miguel Pinto.

Pero ante los constantes fallos chilenos, Argentina logró abrir el marcador hasta el minuto 27 por medio de un golazo del jugador del Barcelona, Lionel Messi, y logró aumentar su ventaja tres minutos después en los botines del futbolista del Real Madrid, Gonzalo Higuaín, en una gran jugada individual.

Con las anotaciones en contra, Chile se desconcentró y ya no pudo generar el mismo peligro sobre el marco de Sergio Romero, lo más que pudo hacer fue un disparo desviado de Mauricio Isla, pero la pizarra ya no se movió.

Para el segundo tiempo, Chile salió con la única idea de acortar las distancias; sin embargo, se topó con una ordenada defensa argentina que rompió todo intento andino.

Pero debido a la presión chilena en el campo argentino, el equipo de Alejandro Sabella empezó a jugar al contragolpe, táctica que estuvo a punto de darle dividendos a su escuadra, luego de que al minuto 67 Lionel Messi se quedó cerca del tercero, pero el portero Pinto tapó con buen lance el disparo de zurda de atacante culé.

Chile buscó por todos los medios de conseguir su primer gol, pero los intentos de Gary Medel, Marcelo Díaz, Felipe Gutiérrez y Matías Fernández se quedaron en aproximaciones, por lo que el tiempo empezó a jugar en su contra.

Finalmente, el conjunto local logró acortar las distancias al minuto 90 con el gol de Felipe Gutiérrez, quien a pase de Alexis Sánchez con fuerte disparo cruzado de zurda pudo vencer a Romero, quien todavía alcanzó a desviar el balón, pero éste pegó en el segundo poste y se fue a las redes.

Chile en tiempo de compensación quiso intentar el gol de la igualada, pero el silbante finalizó el partido y el juego quedó sentenciado en su contra, sumando su tercera derrota consecutiva en esta eliminatoria.
