CC Sabathia y sus compañeros neoyorquinos vieron el profundo batazo de Nate McLouth y fue calificado como foul por un estrecho margen y luego aguantó hasta el final para vencer el viernes 3-1 a Baltimore en el decisivo quinto partido de la serie divisional de la Liga Americana.

Con Alex Rodríguez en la banca, los Yanquis avanzaron a la serie de campeonato de la Liga Americana en contra de los Tigres de Detroit, que arrancará el sábado por la noche en el Bronx.

Sabathia lanzó pelota de cuatro imparables, luego de salir de un problema con las bases llenas en la octava. Fue su primer partido completo de postemporada, y el primero para los Yanquis desde que lo hiciera Roger Clemens en el 2000.

Sin embargo, fue otro el partido que este juego evocó.

Baltimore de nuevo salió mal parado en una jugada cerrada, haciendo recordar lo que ocurrió en el viejo Yankee Stadium en el primer partido de la serie de campeonato de la Liga Americana en 1996.

En esta ocasión, con los Orioles perdiendo 1-0 en la sexta, McLouth conectó un lanzamiento a lo profundo del jardín derecho. Todos los ojos se dirigieron al umpire de jardín derecho Fieldin Culbreth, quien claramente movió los brazos dictaminando el batazo como de foul.

El piloto de los Orioles Buck Showalter salió a pedir una revisión con video, y cinco de los umpires entraron al túnel para revisar las imágenes. Cuando volvieron al campo, unos dos minutos después, no hicieron ninguna señal —lo que significa que la decisión tomada en el campo se mantenía. McLouth se ponchó en el siguiente lanzamiento para concluir el episodio.

El aficionado Steven Ellis atrapó la pelota en el segundo piso de las gradas con su gorra de los Yanquis. "Fue foul completamente, nunca tocó el poste", dijo.

Ada Cruz, sentada detrás de Ellis, agregó que "no había manera. Yo lo vi y él la atrapó".

Un acomodador del estadio que no quiso dar su nombre, sin embargo, aseguró que la pelota golpeó el poste que marca la zona de foul.

En 1996, un niño de 12 años llamado Jeffrey Maier se estiró sobre la barda y encima del jardinero derecho Tony Tarasco y desvió el elevado conectado por Derek Jeter. El umpire Richie García lo marcó como cuadrangular, el cual empató el marcador a 4 en la octava entrada, y los Yanquis ganaron en la 11ma.

"Yo lo vi en mi casa, lo prometo", envió un mensaje de texto Maier a The Associated Press después de la jugada.

Raúl Ibáñez conectó el sencillo de la ventaja en el quinto episodio contra Jason Hammel e Ichiro Suzuki sumó un doblete productor en la sexta.

Curtis Granderson colocó la pizarra 3-0 con un cuadrangular solitario en la séptima entrada. Los Yanquis avanzaron luego de haber decidido sentar en la banca a su tercera base Alex Rodríguez, su hombre de 275 millones de dólares.

Por los Orioles no batearon latinoamericanos.
