La selección de México tardó en carburar, pero al final del partido no tuvo problemas para golear a su similar de Guyana 5-0 en el BBVA Compass Stadium, en Texas, Estados Unidos, con lo que mantiene de esta manera su paso perfecto en la tercera ronda de la eliminatoria de la CONCACAF.

El encuentro fue muy desigual, pues el conjunto mexicano mostró su superioridad de principio a fin; sin embargo, sus delanteros en la mayor parte del cotejo se cansaron de fallar ante el portero Derrick Carter.

La historia del encuentro pudo haber cambiado desde los primeros tres minutos de iniciado, luego del penal fallado de manera sobrada por Javier Hernández, pero a partir de este momento varios jugadores mexicanos, como Oribe Peralta, Javier Aquino, Andrés Guardado, entre otros, se contagiaron de la soberbia del delantero del Manchester United.

Sin embargo, luego del total dominio mexicano, en una desconcentración de la zaga al 33', la escuadra de Guyana estuvo cerca de irse arriba en el marcador en una doble oportunidad, pero el portero Jonathan Orozco salvó su meta.

Los primeros 45 minutos terminaron con el asedio mexicano, pero sin la claridad deseada por su entrenador José Manuel dela Torre.

Para el segundo tiempo, la tónica del encuentro fue la misma, México siguió encima del rival, pero con la mira chueca de sus atacantes, pues continuaron fallando oportunidades claras en la portería enemiga.

Por fin la sequía azteca terminó hasta al minuto 78 con el gol de Andrés Guardado, quien mediante un disparo fuera del área grande de zurda mandó al fondo la pelota; siendo este tanto la llave para que México consiguiera la goleada.

La segunda anotación llegó rápidamente en los botines de Oribe Peralta al 80'; la tercera, en un autogol de Charles Pollard al 82'; la cuarta, en un cabezazo de Javier Hernández al 83' y la quinta y última estuvo a cargo de Ángel Reyna, quien mediante otro disparo de larga distancia al minuto 85 cerró la pizarra.
