NUEVA YORK .- Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, ex editor del New York Times que llevó al periódico a nuevos niveles de influencia y ganancias durante algunos de los momentos más trascendentes del periodismo en el siglo XX, murió el sábado. Tenía 86 años.

Durante las tres décadas que estuvo a cargo del New York Times, el periódico ganó 31 premios Pulitzer, publicó los llamados Documentos del Pentágono sobre la guerra de Vietnam y ganó una demanda por calumnia que estableció la primera protección constitucional para la prensa.
"Punch, el viejo capitán de la Infantería de Marina que nunca rehuyó a una pelea, era un vigoroso defensor de la libertad de prensa", manifestó su hijo y actual editor del Times, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger hijo, en un comunicado.
La renuencia de su padre a echarse atrás en las disputas sobre libertad de expresión "ayudaron a expandir el acceso a información primordial y evitar la censura y la intimidación gubernamental", agregó.
