La selección de Uruguay no pudo aprovechar el jugar en su estadio Centenario y solamente su futbol le alcanzó para empatar a un gol con su similar de Ecuador, encuentro correspondiente a la eliminatoria sudamericana rumbo a Brasil 2014.

El partido fue un ir y venir en ambas porterías, sobre todo en la parte final del segundo tiempo, donde los porteros fueron clave para que el marcador no fuera más abultado gracias a sus oportunas intervenciones.

Desde el comienzo del cotejo, el fiel de la balanza se inclinó rápidamente a favor del equipo visitante, pues al minuto 7 se fue adelante en el marcador por un claro penal de Diego Lugano sobre Felipe Caicedo, quien con mucha personalidad no tuvo problema para anotarlo.

Ecuador controló mejor el partido con la ventaja, siendo sus delanteros Christian Benítez y Felipe Caicedo un dolor de cabeza para la zaga charrúa, que gracias a la velocidad de ambos fueron difíciles de controlar por la misma.

Por su parte, Uruguay nunca pudo meterse al partido, pues su tripleta de lujo -Suárez, Forlán y Cavani- brilló por su ausencia; lo mejor que tuvo en esta primera mitad el cuadro charrúa fue al 43' una pelota al poste del jugador del Liverpool inglés Luis Suárez.

Para la parte complementaria, Ecuador siguió siendo mejor, incluso el silbante paraguayo Carlos Amarilla se comió un penal a favor de los ecuatorianos, luego de una clara falta del portero Fernando Muslera sobre Benítez en un contragolpe.

Esta jugada fue clave en el curso del juego, pues Ecuador se relajó y al minuto 66 Edinson Cavani se encontró con un rebote dentro del área grande y con zurdazo mandó al fondo de la portería, dejando parado al portero Alexander.

El juego se abrió más y la figura de ambos arqueros se empezó a eregir al final, luego de evitar las caídas de su marcos en oportunidades claras. Fernando Muslera le paró un disparo a bocajarro a Christian Benítez, mientras que Alexander Domínguez se aventó un paradón a cabezazo de Luis Suárez.

En tiempo de compensación, Ecuador se quedó con un hombre menos, luego de la expulsión de Antonio Valencia por doble tarjeta amarilla; sin embargo, esto ya no importó, pues el tiempo se agotó para que Uruguay le sacara provecho a ello.
