Miles de fanáticos que se aprestaban a cerrar con broche de oro el feriado de 'Labor Day' viendo jugar al número uno del mundo Roger Federer, se quedaron con las ganas. El suizo pasó a cuartos de final sin jugar por cuanto el estadounidense Mardy Fish no se presentó por razones de salud.

"Lamento tener que retirarme del US Open por medidas cautelares. Yo me resistía a hacerlo, pero estoy siguiendo las instrucciones médicas. Tuve un buen verano y espero reanudar mi calendario de torneos en el otoño", fue el escueto comunicado de Mardy Fish entregado a los medios a través de la oficina de prensa del torneo.

Se desconoce las causas que pudieron mermar la salud del estadounidense, no obstante los dos partidos previos jugados por Fish fueron intensos y largos. El primero ante el ruso Nicolay Davydenko se extendió a cinco set por marcador de 4-6, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-1 y 6-2, el segundo contra el francés Gilles Simon se jugó en cuatro sets por el marcador de 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) y 6-3.

De su parte Federer emitió la siguiente declaración sobre el retiro de Fish que ostenta el número 23 del ranking ATP.

"Estoy muy apenado por Mardy. Sólo quiero desearle una pronta recuperación. Todos queremos volver a verlo pronto de gira", dijo el suizo en un comunicado y comentó sobre su partido siguiente ante el checo Tomas Berdych.

"Va a ser un partido difícil contra Tomás. Hemos jugado muchas veces en el pasado y siempre ha sido un rival difícil. Voy a tener que seguir sirviendo bien y dictar los puntos".

Federer apenas ha sido exigido en sus partidos previos que los ha ganado en tres sets corridos. El primero ante el estadounidense Donald Young a quien derrotó por el marcador de 6-3, 6-2 y 6-4, el segundo ante el alemán Bjorn Pau por 6-2, 6-3 y 6-2 y el último ante el español Fernando Verdasco por 6-3, 6-4 y 6-4.

Por otro lado el español Nicolás Almagro fue un fácil rival para el checo Tomas Berdych que lo superó en tres sets por 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 y 6-1. La eliminación de Verdasco dejó a David Ferrer como el único jugador español en el torneo.

El checo que es el sexto favorito en el US Open como quedó establecido antes enfrentará a Federer. Berdych es un jugador de gran regularidad que ya ha enfrentado con buenos resultados al suizo, la última vez lo derrotó en semifinales de Wimbledon en el 2010. Sin embargo el balance general es ampliamente favorable a Federer por 11-4.

En el ramo femenino Serena Williams no tuvo contemplación con la checa Andrea Hlavackova a quien arrolló por un doble 6-0 y se plantó en cuartos de finales del abierto estadounidense.

La menor de las Williams enfrentará en esa instancia a la serbia Ana Ivanovic quien a primera hora hoy eliminó a la búlgara Tsvetana Pironkova por 6-0 y 6-4.

Serena Williams se perfila como una de las finalistas dada la contundencia de sus triunfos en la actual edición del abierto de Estados Unidos. Serena, actual número 4 del ranking de la WTA, ha levantado el cetro de campeona del US Open en tres oportunidades, en 1999, 2002 y el 2008.

El año pasado llegó a la final donde cayó ante la australiana Samantha Stosur.
