LONDRES (AP) — El sudafricano Oscar Pistorius cuestionó la victoria del brasileño Alan Oliveira en la final de los 200 metros de los Juegos Paralímpicos, aduciendo que su rival usa prótesis que le dan ventaja.
Pistorius, quien pese a tener las dos piernas amputadas se mide de tú a tú con los grandes astros del deporte, vio frustrada su ilusión de ganar por tercera vez seguida los 200 metros en los Paralímpicos cuando Oliveira lo rebasó sobre el final el domingo por la noche.
A poco de finalizada la carrera el sudafricano dijo que las autoridades de los Juegos Paralímpicos deberían prohibir las prótesis que usa Oliveira, quien también perdió las dos piernas. Sostuvo que las prótesis son muy largas y lo hacen correr más rápido.
Poseriormente Pistorius ofreció disculpas, diciendo que debió haberse guardado su queja para otro momento.
"No quiero restarle méritos a otro atleta en su momento triunfal. Me disculpo por lo inoportuno de mis comentarios", declaró el sudafricano en un comunicado.
El Comité Internacional Paralímpico, en tanto, aceptó reunirse con Pisitorius para analizar su queja.
"Considero que hay un problema aquí. Me complace tener la oportunidad de hablar con el CIP sobre el tema y admito que me equivoqué al plantear el asunto inmediatamente después de la carrera", dijo Pistorius. "Fue el momento de gloria de Alan. Quiero dejar bien sentado el respeto que siento por él".
El propio Pistorius se pasó años luchando con las autoridades del deporte para convencerlas de que las prótesis no le daban ventaja alguna cuando corría contra atletas sin discapacidades y de que se le debía permitir competir en los Juegos Olímpicos.
Finalmente lo logró e hizo historia en Londres 2012, donde fue el primer atleta con discapacidades que participa en los Juegos Olímpicos. Llegó a las semifinales en los 400 y a la final en el 4x400.
Las prótesis que usa Pistorius son las que aprobó el COI para competir contra atletas sin discapacidades. Oliveira emplea unas mucho más largas, con las que cronometró 21.45 segundos el domingo en el Estadio Olímpico ante 80.000 espectadores.
"Estos tipos son mucho más altos y no puedes competir con gente con ese tranco", sostuvo Pistorius después de la carrera. "Vieron todo el terreno que recuperó. No fue una carrera justa".
Pistorius, no obstante, admitió que la prótesis de Oliveira no violó los reglamentos actuales del CPI.
"Permiten que los atletas usen prótesis larguísimas. Tratamos de plantear el asunto antes de los juegos, pero nadie nos escuchó", indicó.
El sudafricano dijo asimismo que era "ridículo" que Oliveira lo hubiese superado luego de estar ocho metros atrás después de los 100.
"Nunca hizo 21 segundos ni creo que sea capaz de hacer ese tiempo", afirmó Pistorius, quien recalcó que jamás perdió una carrera paralímpica.
Su compatriota Arnu Fourie, quien entró cuarto, estuvo de acuerdo.
"Pregúntele a cualquiera si no ese algo desproporcionado", expresó. "Creo que el 99% de la gente te va a decir que sí".
Pistorius y Oliveira volverán a medirse en el 4x100 el miércoles, los 100 el jueves y los 400 el sábado.
