LONDRES (AP) — Los anillos olímpicos han desaparecido en Londres y los símbolos de los Juegos Paralímpicos ocupan su sitio. Que empiecen los juegos, de nuevo.
Miles de atletas ya llegaron a Londres para la ceremonia de apertura, el miércoles, en el regreso de los Paralímpicos a sus raíces.
El rostro familiar de Oscar Pistorius y sus aún más reconocibles prótesis han ayudado a llevar el movimiento de los Paralímpicos a las masas, y ya se han vendido 2,3 millones de boletos.
Agosto ha sido un mes de logros para Pistorius.
El sudafricano defenderá los tres títulos que ganó hace cuatro años en los Paralímpicos de Beijing, apenas unas semanas después de convertirse en el primer corredor de velocidad amputado que compite en los Juegos Olímpicos.
"Estoy muy emocionado de estar de vuelta en Londres", dijo Pistorius, que compitió en los 400 metros y en los relevos 4x400 a principios de mes en el estadio olímpico de 80.000 lugares. "Fue una experiencia increíble competir en los Juegos Olímpicos y recordaré por el resto de mi vida el recibimiento de los aficionados".
Pistorius, de 25 años, tuvo que luchar en batallas dentro y fuera de la pista para convertirse en la imagen de los Paralímpicos, donde competirá en los 100, 200 y 400 metros.
"Está en todos lados", dijo el presidente del comité organizador en Londres Sebastian Coe.
Sin embargo, Coe dijo que las medallas "no están aseguradas para él" en los Paralímpicos.
"El deporte está en su mejor posición cuando hay competencia", agregó.
El duelo llegará en los 100 metros, ya que Pistorius no es más el hombre más rápido sin piernas.
"Blade Runner" sufrió su primera derrota en siete años en competencias paralímpicas cuando el estadounidense Jerome Singleton le ganó el título mundial de los 100 metros el año pasado, mientras que el británico Jonnie Peacock ostenta el récord mundial.
"Los 100 metros serán los más competitivos que creo que se haya visto en los juegos", dijo Pistorius.
Pistorius ha ayudado a darle brillo a los Paralímpicos más que nunca.
Muchos de los 4.200 atletas de 165 países desfilarán en la ceremonia de apertura que celebrará al visionario doctor que concibió los Paralímpicos, Ludwig Guttmann, quien usó el deporte para la rehabilitación de soldados heridos en la Segunda Guerra Mundial y organizó juegos en hospitales cuando se realizaron los Juegos Olímpicos en Londres en 1948, que evolucionaron para convertirse en los Paralímpicos en 1960.
