LONDRES (AP) — Gracias, Usain Bolt. Muchísimas gracias.

Por ser una leyenda viviente, tal y como lo prometió. Por reescribir los libros de récords al repetir un triplete dorado en la velocidad pura. Y por irradiar ese irresistible carisma que permitió una comunión perfecta con los aficionados, dándole a estos Juegos Olímpicos una etiqueta de memorables.

Bolt fue otra vez el torbellino que hipnotiza a todos, pendientes tanto a sus hazañas en la pista como al desenfado con que se conduce.

El presidente del COI Jacques Rogge debería estar agradecido con Bolt con su infinita capacidad para entretener a la gente, en vez de ponerle peros.

Quién otro hubiese podido dirigir una ola en el Estadio Olímpico tras romper el récord mundial con el relevo 4x100.

"Fue un adiós a Londres. Me estaba divirtiendo con la gente", dijo Bolt. "Yo vine a Londres para convertirme en leyenda y ahora soy una leyenda, y quería darle las gracias por apoyarme".

Todo cuando muchos creían que la espalda del jamaiquino y un compatriota en ascenso —Yohan Blake— le impedirían repetir su gesta de Beijing.

Bolt no fue el único que silenció a los escépticos. Londres, la ciudad anfitriona, cumplió con su asignatura, arropando los juegos con entusiasmo, con una espontánea ceremonia de apertura en la que la reina Isabel II se dejó escoltar por el actor Daniel Craig, personificando a James Bond. Londres deja tantas páginas de momentos conmovedores e inolvidables.

Michael Phelps completó su ilustre trayectoria en la natación al atrapar cuatro medallas de oro y dos de plata para erigirse como el deportista más laureado en la historia de los juegos, con una cosecha de 22 preseas, incluidas 18 doradas.

¿Quién olvidará el llanto de Félix Sánchez al entonarse el himno de la República Dominicana y sacar la foto de su abuela fallecida al cruzar la meta tras ganar un segundo oro en los 400 metros con vallas, con un paréntesis de ocho años.

La aparición de Ye Shiwen, la china que asombró cuando nadó más rápido que Ryan Lochte y Phelps en los últimos 50 metros en la prueba equivalente de los 400 estilos.

Oscar Pistorius, el sudafricano que se convirtió en el primer atleta con las piernas amputadas que compite en los Juegos Olímpicos.

El récord de títulos de los dueños de casa, que tuvieron su mayor esplendor con la tripleta lograda en una media de hora del atletismo, en el que Mo Farah se impuso en unos vibrantes 10.000 metros. Nacido en Somalia, pero orgulloso de su condición de británico, Farah celebró en la pista del Estadio Olímpico con su hija y esposa embarazada, que espera mellizos.

La gesta de México al vencer a Brasil en Wembley para quedarse con el oro y privarle a los sudamericanos del único título que falta en su salón de trofeos.

Pero también está el pundonor de gente que exhibe el espíritu olímpico en su estado más puro, como el remero Hamadou Djibo Issaka de Níger, que aprendió el deporte apenas tres meses antes y Benjamin Schulte, el chico de 16 años de Guam, que no paró de nadar hasta completar el maratón acuático, nueve minutos después del ganador.

En lo estrictamente competitivo, aunque el Comité Olímpico Internacional siempre recalca que no existe una coronación oficial al país con más medallas, Estados Unidos y China se alternaron en la punta a lo largo de las dos semanas y media de acción.

Al final, Estados Unidos volteó los papeles con respecto a Beijing en el cómputo de oros. Hace cuatro años, China se entonó por su condición de anfitriona y se apoderó de la mayor cantidad de títulos, pero esta vez fueron superados por los estadounidenses por 46-38. La diferencia fue más amplia en el acumulado global, 104-87.
