La mexicana María del Rosario Espinoza, quien fuera campeona olímpica en la categoría de 67 kilogramos en Beijing 2008, se llevó la medalla de bronce al derrotar a la cubana Glenhis Hernández, en la llave del repechaje. En un combate muy reñido que quedó 4-1 favor a la mexicana, Espinoza sumó su segunda medalla olímpica en su carrera.
María del Rosario perdió la gloria olímpica al ser derrotada por una controversial patada de la competidora de Serbia, Mandic Milica, quien disputará el oro ante la francesa Graffe Anne-Caroline.
Después en en la fase de repechaje que disputó en su primer encuentro ante la samoana Crawley Talitiga quien le dio un puñetazo en la cara, en el pómulo derecho, ganando el combate por 11 - 1.
